VerbalTek Offers Multimodal Speech Access to the Mobile Internet

Mobile Devices Running Windows(R)CE Now Able to Include VerbalNET 1.1

Voice-In, Data-Out (VIDO) Speech Recognition Technology

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from VerbalTek, Inc.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- VerbalTek, Inc., the leading
developer of speech recognition technology for mobile devices, announced the
 introduction of VerbalNET 1.1 -- a breakthrough voice-in, data-out (VIDO(TM))
platform for multimodal Internet access on mobile devices. VerbalNET 1.1,
using speaker-independent DSR (Distributed Speech Recognition) and other
advanced technologies, allows users to browse and search the mobile Internet
using speech with the output displayed as data on the screen. The software is
being made available to manufacturers of mobile devices running the
 Windows(R) CE operating system.
VerbalNET 1.1 has been enhanced to be faster and more accurate, require
less bandwidth, and work seamlessly with wireless services.
"We are proud to be the first to offer this breakthrough technology that
changes the way users interact with their mobile devices," said Dr. James Pan,
president and CEO of VerbalTek, Inc. "Using speech to direct Internet and
mobile commerce activities will foster and guide the growth of wireless
communications worldwide, and VerbalTek offers this technology today."
As opposed to voice-in, voice-out user interfaces found in voice portals
and most other speech recognition systems today, the multimodal VerbalNET
interface is the world's first to feature voice-in and data-out, which will
pave the way for the next generation of user-friendly mobile features. And,
as mobile devices become increasingly more powerful and sophisticated
-- offering new technologies such as GPS location-based services and
high-speed mobile Internet access -- these enhanced mobile technologies are a
perfect match for the rich, multimodal VerbalNET user interface.
"VerbalTek, with its Voice-in Data-out application using their Distributed
Speech Recognition technology, is well positioned to take advantage of new
Windows CE PDA and other smart phones coming online," said Nancy Jamison,
Principal Analyst at Jamison Consulting. "When linked with applications being
offered by Wireless Application Providers -- coupled with vertical market
content -- a speech-to-text solution such as VerbalTek's promises to be a most
exciting answer to the problem of making wireless access to data fast and easy
for the typical mobile users. They are poised to be a leader in the area of
 multimodal interface deployment."
VerbalNET multimodal technology will have a significant impact on the way
people access the Internet worldwide. For example, a PDA user will be able to
say: "restaurants, Italian" and see an interactive map of the closest Italian
restaurants displayed on the screen, as well as synthesized text-to-speech
voice that says: "The closest restaurant is two miles straight ahead."
VerbalTek's speech recognition products are based on patented and
patent-pending technologies that reduce processing power and memory
requirements required for mobile devices. Currently, VerbalNET is available
in seven languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The
company plans to integrate its software with other major operating systems,
including Palm, Symbian's EPOC and Linux, as well as other mobile handset
 protocols including i-mode(TM) and WAP.
