Recognition into ACCESS NetFront Browsers

Apr 03, 2001, 01:00 ET from VerbalTek, Inc.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. and TOKYO, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- VerbalTek, Inc., a
leading provider of speech recognition technology and professional integration
services, announces the signing of a memorandum of understanding with ACCESS
Co., Ltd. to initiate a program to integrate its VerbalNET(TM) 1.1 speech
recognition technology with ACCESS' NetFront and Compact NetFront browser
platforms. ACCESS' Compact NetFront micro browser is the industry's first and
most popular micro browser based on the Compact HTML standard, which has been
proven in more than 10 million of NTT DoCoMo's i-mode phones in Japan.
VerbalNET(TM) 1.1 is the first VIDO (Voice-in Data-out) speech recognition
technology to browse the mobile Internet by voice. It is the first commercial
application of DSR (Distributed Speech Recognition), which distributes the
speech processing between mobile devices and centralized servers and never
needs to be trained. The system functions with HTML, WAP and cHTML Internet
 content.
"I think it's clear that VerbalNET is a perfect match for the NetFront
browser. Using speech to surf the mobile Internet is the next logical step for
a mobile web browsing system, and VerbalTek is equipped to make that goal a
reality in the near future," said Dr. James Pan, President and CEO of
 VerbalTek.
"Speech is a very natural and intuitive method for accessing data on a
small device, so we believe strongly that our customers will see immediate
value with VerbalNET. This partnership also highlights ACCESS' trend of
continually looking at new technologies to expand our dominance in the
micro-browser market," said Toru Arakawa, founder and CEO of ACCESS.
VerbalTek's mobile speech recognition products are based on patented and
patent-pending technologies that reduce processing power and memory
requirements. VerbalNET(TM) 1.1 is available for a wide variety of platforms
and is available in multiple languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English
and German, with other languages in development.
NetFront is a compact yet powerful embedded Internet Browser that is ideal
for Internet appliances, such as Internet TVs, personal digital assistants
(PDAs), set-top-boxes and car navigation systems. It supports the full HTML
3.2 specification and selected portions of HTML 4.0. It supports frames,
JavaScript, cookies, web printing and multilingual capabilities. Compact
NetFront micro-browser is the industry's first and most popular micro-browser.
It is based on the Compact-HTML standard, and is most widely deployed in NTT
DoCoMo's i-mode, the world's most successful wireless Internet service.
