NEW YORK, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Music stars Marc Anthony, Kid Rock and
acclaimed newcomer Nelly Furtado will join previously announced performers
Mary J. Blige, Salsa legend Celia Cruz and hot Grammy-nominated rising star
Jill Scott when "VH1 Divas Live: The One and Only Aretha Franklin," the fourth
annual star-studded "VH1 Divas" concert, airs live on Tuesday, April 10 at
9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). Marc Anthony and Kid Rock will each sing a duet with Ms.
Franklin. The Backstreet Boys' A.J., Howie and Kevin, big-screen stars
Sigourney Weaver and Renee Zellweger, Angie Harmon of "Law & Order," star of
TV's "VIP" Pamela Anderson, suave Hollywood leading man Billy Dee Williams and
"The Sopranos" stars Edie Falco, Lorraine Bracco, Drea DeMateo and Aida
Turturro will join superstar singer Janet Jackson as presenters for the event.
"VH1 Divas Live: The One and Only Aretha Franklin" will bring together
some of the biggest male and female artists in music history for one night of
unforgettable performances, while spotlighting living legend "Lady Soul"
onstage at New York City's legendary Radio City Music Hall. Additional
special guests and performers will be announced as they are confirmed.
Marc Anthony has left his mark on American popular culture in many ways,
and in a very short time. He has sold more records than any salsa singer in
the world, starred on Broadway in Paul Simon's "The Capeman," on the silver
screen in Martin Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead" and Stanley Tucci's "Big
Night," and sold out Madison Square Garden five times. Despite huge fame in
other countries, however, Anthony remained relatively unknown outside the
Latin music world in the U.S. -- the result of having sung almost exclusively
in Spanish -- until the September 1999 release of his English-language CD,
"Marc Anthony." The album has since been certified quadruple platinum. A
1998 Grammy winner for Best Latin/Tropical Performance (for "Contra la
Corriente"), he has also been nominated for Grammies for Best Male Pop Vocal
Performance (1999) for "I Need To Know" as well as Best Pop Vocal Performance
(2000) for "You Sang to Me."
Kid Rock is one of rock's most compelling artists and performers. Fueled
by the success of singles like "Bawitdaba," "Cowboy," "Only God Knows Why" and
"American Badass," Kid Rock has seen his last two albums, "Devil Without A
Cause" and "History of Rock" soar to 9 times platinum and 3 times platinum,
respectively. Known for his explosive live concerts, the star has just
wrapped up a sold-out, headlining American tour. He has been nominated for
two Grammy awards and this year had the honor of inducting his longtime
heroes, Aerosmith into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kid Rock is also
enjoying his debut on the "big screen" with a role in David Spade's current
movie, "The Adventures of Joe Dirt."
At age 20, Nelly Furtado is the hottest young star in music with the
release of her critically acclaimed first album for DreamWorks Records, "Whoa
Nelly!," which has been propelled to certified gold status by the hit single
"Like a Bird." The eclectic singer mixes English, Portuguese and Hindi
languages as well as plays guitar, ukulele and trombone. She also played her
first real concerts last year on the Lilith Fair tour, performing alongside
such top stars as Chrissie Hynde and Sarah McLachlan.
"Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz has recorded with some of the biggest names in
music including Dionne Warwick, Patti Labelle, David Byrne, Gloria Estefan and
Wyclef Jean. With over 70 albums recorded, her music has garnered a healthy
amount of gold and platinum records, plus more than a hundred awards from
prestigious institutions worldwide. In addition, Celia Cruz has received
twelve Grammy nominations, winning it for the first time in 1989.
The "VH1 Divas" phenomenon began on April 14, 1998, when "VH1 Divas Live"
spotlighted Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and
Shania Twain together onstage at New York's Beacon Theatre. "VH1 Divas Live
'99," airing live from the Beacon Theatre on April 13, starred Whitney
Houston, Cher, Tina Turner and Brandy, with special guests Sir Elton John,
LeAnn Rimes, Mary J. Blige, Faith Hill and Chaka Khan. Last year, the April
11 presentation of "VH1 Divas 2000: A Tribute to Diana Ross" featured Diana
Ross, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill and Donna Summer, plus Destiny's Child, Hilary
Swank, RuPaul, Queen Latifah, and former Supremes singers Lynda Laurence and
Scherrie Payne. One week later, Sting, Backstreet Boys, Tom Jones, D'Angelo
and Enrique Iglesias challenged the Divas at their own musical game with "Men
Strike Back," the first-ever male dominated Divas concert, also featuring
Christina Aguilera and Sisqo. The three "Divas" specials are among the
all-time highest rated broadcasts in VH1's history.
VH1's "Divas" specials raise funds for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation,
a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music programs
in America's public schools, and to raising awareness of the positive impact
that music participation has on students. Since VH1 Save The Music was
created in 1997, more than $10 million worth of musical instruments has been
donated to 530 public schools in 40 cities, improving the lives of more than
 200,000 children.
"VH1 Divas Live: The One and Only Aretha Franklin - A Benefit Concert for
VH1 Save The Music Foundation" is sponsored by Dodge and Chrysler, Clairol
Hydrience and Infusium, Visa, Diet Coke, Old Navy, Kodak Max HQ One-Time-Use
 Flash Camera and Revlon.
