ViaCast Turns Up the Volume of Broadband IP Satellite Solution With New 8-PSK Turbo Capability; Enhanced IP-Companion(R) Receiver/Router Increases Throughput, Lowers Satellite Costs

Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from ViaCast Networks, Inc.

    IJAMSVILLE, Md., April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- ViaCast
 Networks, Inc., a leader in end-to-end broadband IP solutions, announced today
 that it is now taking orders for its IP-Companion satellite receiver/routers
 with 8PSK modulation technology. ViaCast's enhanced IP-Companion delivers
 increased throughput performance while dramatically lowering satellite usage
 requirements and costs.
     ViaCast has implemented an innovative solution that facilitates the
 transition of legacy satellite networks to the new more efficient 8PSK
 modulation scheme. Through ViaCast's innovative Turbo Code software and
 hardware implementation, the transition is accomplished using ViaCast's
 Maestro(TM) Network Management Software. There is no antenna upgrade required
 to benefit from the 8PSK modulation efficiencies. Operators can now take
 advantage of up to 33% more throughput in the same amount of satellite
 bandwidth, without incurring a power penalty. If additional power is
 available, up to 100% throughput increases are possible in the same bandwidth.
 IP-Companion Products (IPC-6500, IPC-5500 and IPC-2500) are backward
 compatible with legacy BPSK and QPSK networks. ViaCast is currently offering
 special promotional pricing for a limited time to customers that wish to
 upgrade their legacy networks or wish to rollout new networks using ViaCast's
 8PSK solution.
     "System Operators and Customers evaluate their networks by a simple price
 per bit calculation.
     The recurring satellite costs are by far the largest expenditure satellite
 network operators face", according to Mitch Robinson, ViaCast President and
 CEO. "Our new IP-Companions will improve our customer's bottom line
 immediately."

     IP-COMPANION(R) 8PSK Highlights:

     *  8 PSK Turbo Decoder

     * Backward compatible with BPSK and QPSK networks

     * Fully Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) compliant

     * Unicast and Multicast IP data support up to 72Mbps

     * Supports up to 64 PIDs (Packet Identifiers)

     * Embedded set-top-box architecture for easy installation

     *  L-band receiver (950-2150MHz)
