KeySpan(TM) Software Suite Secures Valuable Media Assets

Apr 19, 2001, 01:00 ET from ViaCast Networks, Inc.

IJAMSVILLE, Md., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- ViaCast Networks, Inc., a leader
in end-to-end broadband IP solutions, announced today that it is shipping its
next generation products with a newly developed Conditional Access System
(CAS) called KeySpan(TM). KeySpan will now enable enterprise customers,
service providers and content providers to secure their valuable digital media
content from unauthorized users. KeySpan, an affordable software-based CAS,
has been designed with scalability, ease of use and interoperability in mind.
Providing end-to-end security, KeySpan encrypts digital media content, as it
is datacast or "MediaCast" over broadband broadcast networks such as
satellite, cable and wireless terrestrial networks.
Based upon an innovative implementation of fixed key 56-bit Data
Encryption Standard (DES), the KeySpan engine provides transport level
security without the additional cost and complexity of Smart Cards. KeySpan's
key management is accomplished using ViaCast's intuitive Maestro(TM) (Network
Management Software. Any broadcast broadband network utilizing ViaCast's
 Forte(TM) gateways and ViaCast's IP-Companion(R), Quantum-MSR(TM) and
Eclipse(TM) satellite receiver/routers can now benefit from KeySpan's
 affordable content security.

     KeySpan(TM) Highlights:

     * Provides commercial grade security at the IP route level
     * Eliminates costly and easily compromised Smart Cards
     * Eliminates need for expensive key management servers
     * Intuitive, easy to use key management via ViaCast's Maestro(TM)
        software
     * Auto-discovery mode automatically configures KeySpan enabled remotes
        and locks-out unauthorized users
     * Keys can be changed securely, on the fly across the network
     * Will work along side legacy MPEG-2 Conditional Access Systems
     * Encryption is transparent to the user and to the network operator

"Our customer's digital media content is their most valuable asset," said
ViaCast president and CEO Mitch Robinson. "KeySpan can protect that content
easily and cost-effectively without the use and expense of Smart Cards and
separate key management solutions. KeySpan dramatically enhances our value
proposition as evidenced by a recent contract award from a content delivery
network provider who implemented ViaCast's end-to-end broadband solution to
thousands of remote sites, largely because of KeySpan's affordability,
protection capabilities, and ease of use."
