Appliance Platform

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Vibrance Networks today announced, at
 COMDEX/Fall 2000, the VNIA(TM) (Vibrance Networks Internet Appliance) 2nd
generation Internet appliance software and services platform. The new platform
enables OEMs, Internet Access Providers (IAPs) and channel partners to deliver
Internet appliances that give end users a personalized, rich media Web
experience with lower total costs and superior branding opportunities.
"Vibrance's goal is to provide an end-to-end Internet appliance solution
that integrates software, hardware, network services, Internet access and
private label branding capabilities into a complete reference design. Our open
software and services platform, which features the Linux(TM) operating system,
delivers that solution by offering a menu of pre-integrated, qualified options
that pull together all the necessary components," says Chris Bedford, Vibrance
 Networks' president and co-founder.
Vibrance Networks, incorporated in April 1999, was born out of a belief in
open standards-based development. Based on open source, the company's VNIA
platform enables IA vendors to get to market quickly with greatly reduced
costs and the option of significant ongoing revenue from contextual
merchandising and personalized, rich media content delivered via the
 VibranceNet(TM) network services.
The Vibrance platform targets hardware OEMs that are developing Internet
access devices such as Web terminals, wireless residential gateways, and
set-top boxes, plus channel partners aiming to deliver branded Internet access
devices and IAPs seeking to offer enhanced services and branding.

     The Vibrance Business Model
Vibrance has combined the open source technologies of Linux and the
Mozilla browser with proprietary components to provide a software platform
that provides fast time-to-market and highly reliable, secure, full-function
 Internet appliance solutions.
For OEMs and IAPs, Vibrance assures low product and support costs. The
Vibrance pricing model provides these customers with a royalty-free license
for the Web appliance software stack and a monthly fee for VibranceNet network
services (or a software license if the customer prefers to host the service
in-house). Vibrance also gives OEMs and IAPs several ways to build brand
 loyalty.
"The Vibrance solution lets manufacturers and IAPs differentiate their
Internet appliances, acquire more customers, capture a share of this growing
technology market and still get to market rapidly. Our end-to-end approach
includes a robust set of network services for both remote device management
and personalized, rich media content delivery," says Mike Weimar, Vibrance's
 Vice President of Marketing.
Vibrance Networks provides channel partners with a menu of pre-integrated
Internet appliance reference platforms to meet diverse market needs. Vibrance
Networks has developed several "best of breed" relationships with partners
such as Real Networks, Pop2It, M-Systems and Zentek Technologies.

     Network Architecture
Leveraging these partnerships, Vibrance's VNIA reference platform includes
hardware, software, Internet access and remote device management. The platform
also provides support for multimedia Codecs and for components such as chips,
monitors and printers. Vibrance products and services include:

-- The VibrantHD(TM) client-side software stack for rich media Internet
appliances. VibrantHD's client supports Java and JavaScript and all leading
media formats. Because it is hard drive-based, VibrantHD can cache music, game
and video content directly on the unit, providing the end user with instant
 access to rich media.
-- Ventrilocast(TM) Application Server, which provides a platform for the
introduction of multiple, ultra thin, fully functional, rich media Web devices
in multi-user environments. This unique terminal/server architecture provides
exceptionally low cost for Vibrance customers. Centralizing processing power
drives down thin-client costs. The more devices, the more dramatically the
cost per device drops. Ventrilocast enables wireless LAN delivery of video and
music content to distributed IAs; any number of devices in the business or
home can use a single Internet connection.
-- VibranceNet network services, which provide hassle-free remote device
management (RDM) and personalized content delivery services to client and
gateway devices. Vibrance's patent-pending RDM technologies provide content,
application and kernel updates along with back-up services. These technologies
are available via a hosted service that reduces the effort, cost and
complexity of deploying Web devices that enhance the brands and promote the
content of Vibrance's customers and partners.

Vibrance's network infrastructure automatically delivers personalized
information, entertainment and shopping content to distributed devices. And it
reapportions revenue from e-commerce transactions to the account of the
company whose brand appears on the device. Complementing the content delivery
feature, the network infrastructure incorporates load-balancing technology to
minimize ISP bandwidth costs. Vibrance I*mediate(TM) load balancing ensures
smart caching; this both enhances the consumer's experience and minimizes the
 burden on the system.
