Handheld Reference Design for the Intel(R) StrongARM* SA-1110 Now Available

With Support For Linux

Jun 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from Viosoft Corporation

CAMPBELL, Calif., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Viosoft(R) today announced the
release of Arriba!(TM) Embedded Linux Kernel Edition for the Intel(R)
StrongARM* SA-1110 development environment. The combination of the Arriba!
Embedded Linux Kernel Edition with the Intel(R) StrongARM* SA-1110 evaluation
board will provide kernel developers with a powerful development platform that
will take full advantage of the Linux operating system and the powerful Intel
 SA-1110 microprocessor.
The Arriba! Embedded Linux Kernel Edition is an Integrated Development
Environment (IDE) and fully integrated source-level kernel debugger for
configuring, customizing, developing and deploying Linux-based embedded
software solutions. The Arriba! Embedded Linux Kernel Edition includes a
target configuration wizard, Linux kernel project management wizard, cross
platform compilers and target monitor for remote source-level kernel/driver
debugging on the Linux version of the Intel SA-1110 development environment.
The advanced debug technology in the Arriba! IDE enables embedded developers
to trace and debug more than 95% of the Linux kernel, including device
drivers, at source level. This gives OEMs and solution providers more time to
focus on the domain problems instead of spending additional cycles in
acquiring the multiple elements involved with Linux BSP porting details.
The Arriba! Embedded Linux Kernel Edition is seamlessly integrated in a
single environment that is hosted on Microsoft Windows(R) 98/00/NT with remote
and direct access to the Linux-based Intel SA-1110 target development
platform, giving embedded developers the most familiar and highest degree of
 development freedom.
This edition provides a complete Linux source level kernel debugging
solution. Product highlights of the Arriba! Embedded Linux Kernel Edition
 include:

-- Target configuration wizard to configure the embedded the Linux kernel
        and drivers.
-- Optimized gcc-based cross compiler to build the smallest and fastest
        embedded Linux code.
-- Flexible and portable project management tools to facilitate import and
        export of Linux kernel.
     -- Integrated remote, cross-platform 'Edit-Compile-Run' functionality
constructed within a single, "windows" style environment.
     -- Syntax-Highlighted Editor with built-in parser and class/method viewer.
-- Graphical project source tree comparison and merge tool for team
        development.
-- True source level kernel debugger capable of multi-tasking, multi-
        thread project editing & analysis.
-- Target monitor (VMON) for remote debugging via serial and/or ethernet
        connection.

"We believe that the strength of Arriba! is its ability to provide a
complete and familiar user environment for Linux developers, capable of
shortening development cycles, thus gaining an edge on the 'time-to-market'
equation," said Karl Blum, director of business development at Viosoft.
"Additionally, Arriba! acts as the foundation for additional 3rd party
software tools and services that will bring more power and flexibility to
 Linux kernel development."
"Innovative companies like Viosoft demonstrate the commitment of the
industry to the Intel(R) Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA) as
a robust development environment that speeds time-to-market," said Mark Casey,
director of marketing for Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "The number of
designers developing Linux-based kernels is growing at an increasing rate. Our
high-performance, low power Intel SA-1110 processor and Viosoft's robust
development environment form an ideal combination for emerging handheld and
 wireless devices utilizing Linux."
An initial 30-day evaluation copy of Arriba! Embedded Linux Kernel Edition
will be included in Intel's SA-1110 SDK. Subsequent copies may be obtained
 directly from Viosoft.
