WAM!(SM) Heats Up Summer With Four Cool New Series

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from Starz Encore's WAM! Network

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- WAM!
America's Kidz Network(SM) (WAM!) refreshes its lineup and introduces four new
contemporary tween series in June: "Breaker High," "Wild Kat," "VOX," and
"Mirror Mirror" (all half-hour series). WAM!'s fresh summer schedule is part
of a continuing plan to strengthen the channel's appeal with series that
emphasize relationship building and tween lifestyles.
On June 1 at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), WAM!'s teen viewers will board "Breaker
High," the most unique educational experience on land or sea. The 44-episode
series will be stripped Monday - Friday at 7:00 p.m. The fictional soap opera
"Breaker High" is the world's most awesome high school -- a cruise ship with
500 teens on board learning about math, science, geography, life, love, and
responsibility. Between their high seas hijinks, students learn about
themselves, each other and their world. Imagine that you are working on your
senior project for your cultural anthropology class and the assignment is to
report on the Samburu tribe of Northwest Kenya. Instead of pouring through
encyclopedias and back issues of National Geographic in the school library
-- you are there -- in Africa. Or you go to phys. ed. class, but instead of
going to the gym, you paddle out into the ten-foot waves off the coast of New
Zealand. How about spending Christmas Eve in China, or mixing up language
with a Brazilian taxi driver, or tasting the local cuisine in Bangkok?
Also beginning on June 1 at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT) is the U.S. premiere of
"VOX" (Voice of a New Generation), a new Friday night magazine series for
young audiences 8-16 that encourages them to explore their ideas, issues, and
the world around them. "VOX" combines the intensity of real stories with
energy, humor, and hip production techniques. Each program offers choices and
alternatives, as tweens and teens reveal who they are and what they think.
 Regular segments include:
-- VOX Pop - Field segments in which kids talk about youth culture and
         current trends.
-- Generation VOX - Profiles of outstanding teens.
-- VOX Life: Social issues that teens grapple with.
-- Flipside - Real life conflict between teens and their parents,
         siblings and friends.
     -- It's Romeo's World - An animated advice column.
-- VOX Unfiltered - Kids rant about issues that ticks them off.

Saturday, June 2 at 6:00 p.m. (ET/PT) begins the U.S. prime time premiere
of "Wild Kat." The show takes viewers into the sci-fi world of Katrina (Kat),
a teenager who "gets in touch with her inner feline." Kat is not happy when
she is sent to live with her mother, a veterinary scientist at a large city
zoo. But life takes a weird twist when Kat comes face to face with Garang, a
ferocious female tiger. Kat comes to realize that she can "mind-meld" with
Garang. Not only can she telepathically share the tiger's emotions, but Kat
acquires certain tiger powers including the ability to see at night and an
acute sense of smell and hearing. Kat embarks on an adventure that leads her
into the brave new world of genetic engineering, where the laws of nature are
 being completely rewritten.
"Mirror Mirror," premiering Saturday, June 2 at 10:00 a.m. (ET/PT), takes
viewers face to face with a magical mirror that links two families to the
secret of time travel. The families, one from the present and the other from
the past, step in and out of each other's worlds through this unique mirror.
They develop relationships through time and space, forming a rich mosaic of
 exciting stories and locations.
"The new schedule spins on the tween coming of age theme -- kids fitting
into their world," says Midge Pierce, vice president of WAM! Programming. "By
helping kids answer the age-old question: What About Me? we're giving
focused new meaning to the WAM! acronym."
