Wasabi Systems Joins the MIPS Alliance Program; Will Port NetBSD to the MIPS32(TM) and MIPS64(TM) Processor Architectures

Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from Wasabi Systems, Inc.

NEW YORK, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Wasabi Systems, Inc., a company founded
by key members of the NetBSD Project, today announced it will be developing
and supporting the NetBSD operating system for processors cores compatible
with the MIPS32 and MIPS64 architectures from
MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS, MIPSB), as part of the MIPS Alliance
Program (MAP). MIPS Technologies is a leading provider of industry standard
processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and network
 applications.
NetBSD is already ported to thirty-five different machine architectures
including several MIPS-based(TM) devices used in Windows(R) CE-based
handhelds, Sony NEWS, and various set-top boxes. As a member of MAP, Wasabi
will enhance NetBSD's support of current MIPS processors and port NetBSD to
the newest and most exciting standard MIPS platforms. Wasabi will also
provide developer services to MIPS licensees and system OEMs using MIPS
 processors.
"NetBSD's unparalleled portability means that it is always on the cutting
edge of microprocessor support. Many of Wasabi's customers use MIPS-based
products in their devices, so this is an excellent opportunity for us to be at
the forefront of technology adoption in an area that's very important to our
customers," stated Jay Michaelson, COO and vice president of Wasabi Systems.
"Our decision to support MIPS Technologies processors strengthens Wasabi's
position as the leader in embedded NetBSD support, and is another indication
that NetBSD has moved into the mainstream for Internet infrastructure and
 other embedded applications."
"We are excited to add Wasabi and NetBSD to our embedded processor
solutions," said Brian Knowles, vice president of marketing at MIPS
Technologies. "The Wasabi products and team are available to developers of
the MIPS architecture who need a highly customizable, small footprint
operating system that also meets the highest standards of stability and
 reliability."
