White Castle: A Smart Choice for Local Scholars

Apr 20, 2001, 01:00 ET from White Castle Systems, Inc.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 20 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- When the
best and brightest students at the Ohio State University entered the Honors
program, they knew they would have the opportunity to feed their minds. This
Sunday, April 22, they'll receive more direct nourishment at a special
 reception, courtesy of White Castle.
The local fast food hamburger chain will be serving up hamburgers and
cheeseburgers for 30 Honors students, who have just completed a course with a
focus on the history of White Castle. In fact, the text used by the students
for the recently completed quarter was, "Selling 'em by the Sack - White
Castle and the Creation of American Food" by Dr. David G. Hogan, who was also
 the instructor for the course.
But burgers and intellectual pursuits? It's no surprise to Dr. Hogan.
"The story of White Castle is a lot more than the story of a company and how
it grew. It's a story that is uniquely American, and it's also a story that
chronicles how we as a culture have developed and evolved in the past 80 years
 or so."
A self-professed "Craver," Dr. Hogan added, "When it comes to White
Castle, no matter how you look at it, there's a lot to sink your teeth into!"
Hogan's book, now in its second printing, seems to have found favor with an
audience hungry to learn more about the now 80-year-old brand.
Jamie Richardson, Director of Marketing at White Castle, offers his own
hypothesis on the attraction of White Castle as a topic of study, "We're
living in the age of the Kodak generation where we are all overexposed and
underdeveloped. White Castle offers a common touchstone, a unifying
experience, so whether you're 18 or 88, you can relate to the great taste and
a sense of craving. And besides all that, they just taste good!"
The event will be held on the Ohio State campus beginning at 5:30 p.m. on
Sunday, April 22 at the Kuhn Honors House at 220 West 12th Avenue.
