Workshops Offer Assistance and Resources to Caregivers
DETROIT, March 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Providing care to an older adult or someone with a disability is challenging. "We're finding the number of older adults needing help is increasing every year," said Christine Goldberg. Caretaking requires more than just good intentions, as caregivers are also responsible for providing care to the physical and mental well-being of a recipient.
Caregivers need care too! The 2010 Caregiver Conferences will provide the information and resources caregivers need to take care of both themselves and their care recipients. Conferences are free to attend and are being held in four convenient locations throughout Wayne County, including, Redford, River Rouge, Flat Rock and Canton. The conferences are funded by The Senior Alliance and a collaborative between Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, Adult Well-Being Services and Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan.
Each event will feature informational displays, workshops, giveaways and a variety of professionals to help caregivers find the information and resources they need. Free health screenings will also be provided two hours before the start of each conference.
Conferences have been scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from 5:30 to 9:00 pm in Redford at the Redford Community Center; Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 12:00-3:30 pm at River Rouge High School in River Rouge; Monday, May 3, 2010 from 12:00-3:30 pm at the Flat Rock Community Center in Flat Rock and Monday, May 10, 2010 from 5:30-9:00 pm at the Summit on the Park in Canton.
All events are free, however, those interested in attending are asked to pre-register by calling (734) 246-2280 ext. 156 for the conference of their choice. You may also pre-register by visiting www.waynemetro.org/caregiver.html. Caregivers and their adult care recipient are welcome to attend.
Service professionals will discuss a variety of topics, including self-care for the caregiver, Alzheimer's/Dementia disease progression, veteran's benefits, care options from home to hospice and legal issues. "There are a lot of people that won't come to a support group. This is a one-time event and a wonderful opportunity to get information and not feel so isolated" Goldberg explained.
In addition, information on home health care and residence options, in-home help, adult day care, prescription assistance, handling stress and respite programs will be available. Free refreshments and door prizes will also be provided.
The role of the caregiver has become even more demanding in today's fast-paced world. "Sometimes, I'll see people who come to events like this turn to each other and start talking to each other. Then they realize they are not alone" said Goldberg.
