XcelleNet Announces Palm Auto-Install for Afaria

First Mobile Management Suite to Offer Instant Client Deployment To

Handheld Devices, Saving Time and Money for IT Managers

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from XcelleNet, Inc.

ATLANTA, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- XcelleNet, Inc., the leading provider of
management solutions for remote systems and mobile & wireless devices, today
unveiled Palm Auto-Install for Afaria(TM), the company's comprehensive mobile
management software. With Palm Auto-Install, Afaria is the first mobile
management solution to provide IT administrators with the tools necessary to
automatically deploy a management client to the device by merely dropping the
device into a cradle. With organizations now deploying thousands of these
handheld devices at a time, Palm Auto-Install is designed to significantly
reduce the time, complexity and cost involved with the initial deployment of
Afaria's Palm OS clients used to provide critical management capabilities to
 each device.
Afaria's Palm Auto-Install allows any computer running Windows 98, NT or
2000 to act as a distribution point for Afaria clients. Once a distribution
point machine is configured according to an organization's preferences, end
users simply dock their Palm in a serial, Ethernet, or EthIR cradle connected
to this machine and press the HotSync button. A pre-configured copy of the
Afaria client is then automatically installed on the device. With the Afaria
client on the Palm, a user can connect to the Afaria transmitter to perform
systems management tasks such as receiving new applications, or collecting
 hardware and software asset information.
Since Palm Auto-Install does not depend on having HotSync running on the
PC, an account for the device does not have to be established before the
Afaria client can be installed, and no user intervention is required. The
need for overworked IS staff to be involved in the installation and
configuration of the Afaria client on Palm devices can be eliminated or
significantly reduced. This important enhancement is just one of the ways
Afaria helps IS gain control over their mobile business implementations.
"As the mobile business market continues to evolve, it is important that
Afaria provides functionality that eases initial deployment of a large number
of handhelds," said Joe Owen, CTO for XcelleNet. "By adding the Palm Auto-
Install to its long list of mobile management features, from document
management to asset tracking to application, and software deployment, Afaria
further reduces IT cost and involvement and adds instant functionality for end
 users."
Afaria eliminates both administrative and user burdens through automated
application deployment and other critical systems management features
including-content distribution, data and systems backup, asset tracking,
security, and business process automation. With this critical upgrade, Afaria
continues to further reduce the cost of ownership for managing mobile devices
by making it easier for IT administrators and help desk personnel to
distribute software clients and track mobile resources.
"Ubiquio supports large deployments of business-critical mobile
applications in a variety of industries including healthcare. Our solutions
depend on automation technologies like Afaria's Palm Auto-Install to improve
quality and reduce cost," said Charles Lukaszewki, CEO of Ubiquio. "We use
Afaria's Palm Auto-Install to streamline our processes and to ensure
 consistency for our customers."
