"In a land of plenty why isn't there plenty on every child's plate? That is why Helping Hands exists." – John Langdon Executive Director
About Helping Hands:
Helping Hands was established in 1995 as a partner agency of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. They are a category 4 which helps over 1,000 clients a month in the greater High Point area and is one of the largest food pantries in Guildford County. They are open 4 times a week to distribute emergency food boxes and on Monday mornings to assist with financial services. Their Mission is to serve, strengthen and support families toward self-sustainability.
A comprehensive study by Feeding America found that 82% of all food pantries' benefits go to households with a child, senior or person with disabilities. The study found a significant need for food assistance across the 18 counties served by the region's major hunger relief organizations.
Their efforts toward children living in poverty has increase exponentially the last 2 years. And though food insecurity is down for adults overall, it has risen for children. The food insecurity rate for children is 25.2%. That's up from 8th to 6th in the nation according to a Gallop Poll in collaboration with the Food Research and Action Center. As published in July 2017 by the US Census Bureau, Guilford County has 526,953 residents with 18.3% of them living in poverty and 22.4% of those under 18. Families with children make up 32% of Helping Hands clients totaling 5,445 individual service transactions in 2018.
Helping Hands Emergency Assistance Ministry is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization since 1995.
