SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) today named Sara Glines president and publisher of The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina. She will assume her new role September 26, 2016. Glines previously served as president of the Atlantic Group for the Gannett Co., overseeing eight daily news organizations and additional non-dailies.
"Sara has deep experience with digital media, raising the digital acumen of her sales teams, improving the digital orientation of her newsrooms and reimagining legacy products," said McClatchy president and CEO Patrick Talamantes. "Her leadership will be a huge asset to both The News & Observer and McClatchy."
Glines has been overseeing digital initiatives for nearly 20 years, beginning as editor in chief of New Jersey Online in 1996. In 1999 she led the conversion of America Online sites and popular magazines like Car & Driver, Woman's Day and Elle to the web as a managing director at Hachette Filipacchi New Media. She joined MediaNews Group in 2003 as vice president, interactive, for their East Coast operations where she managed internet advertising, editorial and technical operations for 14 daily newspapers. She joined the MediaNews corporate team in 2010 and helped lead the company through its operational transition to Digital First Media. During her tenure as regional publisher in Pennsylvania, Glines led the newspaper group, which Gannett Co. acquired in 2015, to a digital-first newsroom workflow.
"The Triangle is a growing and dynamic region," said Glines. "The idea of being part of the leading news organization in this vibrant community is very compelling."
Glines replaces Orage Quarles III, who retired in June after serving 16 years as publisher. She embraces the role the news media plays in the community. "We right wrongs. We help businesses thrive and prosper. We make communities healthier. We make a difference," she said. "My goal for The News & Observer is to make sure we can do that long into the future."
Glines has served on the board of several organizations, including the Cultural Alliance of York County, the YWCA and Girls on the Run. She and her husband, John Kirkpatrick, are looking forward to calling Raleigh home. John's son and daughter-in-law live in Holly Springs, NC, and recently welcomed a new baby girl into their lives. "Being close to family makes this adventure that much more exciting," Glines said.
