XJTLU Leads Reform of Chinese Higher Education with Autonomous Admission Assessment
SUZHOU, China, April 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was chosen as one of a select group of universities nationwide to be allowed by the Chinese government to admit students based in part on its own entrance exam, rather than using the official College Entrance Examination, known as the Gaokao.
On April 13th, as part of the University's Open Day activities, XJTLU hosted the first independent entrance examinations for prospective students from across Jiangsu Province.
Under the new agreement, XJTLU can admit up to 5% of total new students from Jiangsu using "Autonomous Admissions". These students will be evaluated partly on XJTLU's own entrance exam (30% of admissions weighting), partly the Gaokao (60% of weighting) and high-school performance (10%) - a significant departure from government-regulated traditional admissions policies.
The decision makes XJTLU the first Sino-Foreign University to recruit undergraduate students independently in Jiangsu and closely matches the philosophical beliefs of XJTLU in supporting educational reform and opening up in China.
671 candidates submitted an online application to join XJTLU's Autonomous Admissions process this year with 473 invited to Suzhou for assessment over the weekend. Rather than focusing on academic credentials alone, this assessment will evaluate professional aptitude, adaptability and creative potential.
Of the 473 candidates, approximately 220 students can expect to receive an offer from XJTLU on condition of successful completion their Gaokao exam in the summer and the students' performance in their high-school exams. Consequently, the University expects to enroll 110 students from Jiangsu as a result of this years' Autonomous Admissions process.
XJTLU Executive President, Professor Youmin Xi, highlighted the University's physical and philosophical openness. "There are no walls around our university; people are welcome to explore our campus, and we can establish ourselves as an important part of wider society with our positive community interactions and mutual development", Professor Xi explained.
