New Hope in Depression Research - PsyRx Reports Promising Findings from an Ibogaine Study
The study, conducted in 105 mice, examined the effects of ibogaine, citalopram and their combination on behavioral measures associated with depression and anxiety
TEL AVIV, Israel, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- PsyRx (TASE: PSRX) reports that it has received results from a preclinical study investigating the effects of ibogaine, citalopram - a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression and their combination in a mouse model.
The study involved 105 mice divided into seven experimental groups and examined behavioral measures associated with depression and anxiety. Its aim was to further investigate the potential of ibogaine, including its use in combination with existing pharmacological treatments.
According to the study results, statistical significance was observed in one of the anxiety-related measures assessed while evaluating different doses of ibogaine as an adjunct to citalopram. Additional findings indicated numerical improvements in some measures in the group receiving low-dose ibogaine in combination with citalopram; however, these improvements did not reach statistical significance.
The results provide a basis for further investigation of the combination in preclinical research, including the evaluation of different doses and their potential implications.
Important note: This was an animal study, and its findings do not establish the efficacy or safety of the treatment in humans. Further research is required to assess the potential therapeutic significance of these findings.
Itay Hecht, CEO of PsyRx:
"We believe it is important to advance research and development into innovative approaches in mental health. Receiving these study results represents another step in evaluating the potential of ibogaine and building the scientific foundation for future development. We will continue to pursue a data-driven approach, carefully examining the findings and the opportunities for further development."
Prof. Itamar Grotto, Chairman of PsyRx:
"The need to identify new therapeutic approaches for depression calls for rigorous scientific investigation of innovative directions and the development of a solid evidence base. The results of this study provide preliminary findings that warrant further investigation of ibogaine, including in combination with existing pharmacological treatments. It is important to emphasize that this is a preclinical study and that further research is needed to understand the significance of the findings and their relevance to humans."
About PsyRx
PsyRx is an Israeli biotechnology startup developing innovative mental health treatments that combine microdoses of psychedelic compounds, such as ibogaine, with existing antidepressants from the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. The company's approach aims to shorten the time to therapeutic effect and address conditions such as treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
