CHICAGO, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society of Safety Engineers, the world's oldest professional safety society, is proud to bring SAFETY INDIA 2014, a two-day professional development conference and exposition to Chennai, India on May 26-27, 2014.

This marks the first time ASSE will host a professional development conference in India, targeting an audience of the country's safety practitioners from a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, automotive and many others. ASSE has partnered with the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) in India to promote this event.

"Along with engaging safety professionals during this conference, we want to take the opportunity to invite leaders in business and government to learn more about safety initiatives," said IACC (NIC) Infrastructure Committee Chairman Ashish Wig. "Together, ASSE and IACC will make India a society where safety is paramount, which is fitting for the world's largest democracy."

In a country with 1.3 billion people and an economy that is expected to be one of the top three in the world by 2028, according to a London-based think tank, it only makes sense for ASSE to be in India, said ASSE President Kathy Seabrook.

"With India's rapid economic development, it is important to promote thought leadership in occupational health and safety through best-practice sharing at this historic ASSE event," Seabrook said.

In the two years since ASSE opened an Indian chapter in March 2012, membership has grown dramatically, driving the need for delivering valuable membership services locally, and inspiring the idea of bringing together a global community of safety experts in Chennai this spring. The conference, whose theme is "Advancing OSH to Save Lives," will be held at the Leela Palace. It is expected to attract 500 participants and 20 exhibitors from India, Asia, North America and Europe. For more details, updates, or to register for the upcoming conference, please visit www.safetyindia2014.org.

Founded in 1911, the Chicago-based ASSE has more than 35,000 occupational safety, health and environmental professional members from around the globe who lead, manage, supervise, research and consult on safety, health, transportation and environmental issues in all industries, government, labor, health care and education.
