Unbelievable as it may sound, a Bengaluru-based scientist, in a major breakthrough, has claimed to have produced cooking gas (Propane and butane) with water, vegetable and sunlight. Dr. Rajah Vijay Kumar, Chairman, Scalene Energy Research Institute (SERI), Bengaluru, India, said he created the gas with a machine he invented.

"We have produced all the common petroleum fuel hydrocarbons ranging from methane to ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, acetylene, propadiene, iso-butane, n-butane, iso-butylene, iso-pentane, n-pentane, 1-hexene, n-hexane, heptane and octane completely from non-petroleum raw materials at SERI," said Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar.
"We have just invented and registered an international patent of the machine called Hydrodecider, an acronym for HYDRO DisambiguativE CatalytIc Donor REcombination Reactor, through which, with absolutely no 'petroleum materials', to start with, one can produce petroleum gases, the common cooking gas you buy for your cylinder every month," added Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar.
Hydrodecider is a reactor embedded with specially made platinum-palladium super catalyst, which uses water, sunlight (for energy) and an organic carbon donor source (Used edible or non-edible vegetable oil) to produce flammable fuel consisting of C1 to C8 hydrocarbons. This process produces both saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons; they have the same composition as petroleum gases obtained from fossil fuel sources till now. By increasing pressure or reducing the temperature, this gas can be liquefied as LPG.

How does this invention work?
Everyone knows that water is made of two parts of hydrogen and one part of oxygen. Also everyone knows that water can be split into molecular hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2).
But the new discovery and this invention shows that if water is subjected to high frequency resonance in the presence of platinum + palladium super catalyst in a special reactor, the water would probably split into nascent hydrogen (or H[+]) and atomic oxygen (O[-]). These elements in their nascent form is also said to be in disambiguative state or newly born. Atomic oxygen, as is well known, is a very good bond breaker; on Earth's surface monatomic oxygen does not exist naturally for very long, though in outer space, the presence of plenty of ultraviolet radiation results in a low Earth orbit atmosphere in which 96% of the oxygen occurs in atomic form. "We have tested the gas from this invention many times with Gas Chromatography considered a gold standard in gas analysis at accredited laboratories and used it on standard LPG infrastructure, so it is petroleum gases made from non petroleum sources for the first time," added Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar.
The atomic hydrogen or AH (for hydrogen), and atomic oxygen or AO is first produced in a specially designed reactor and then stabilized in a device called Ionic Stabilizer (ISTAB). It is then maintained in its atomic form inside another device called the monatomic accelerator, by application of extremely high polarized discharge, it is then plunged into a Carbon (donor) Reactor, which has the vegetable oil, at very high velocities. The atomic oxygen being an excellent bond breaker, would first break the existing bonds in the vegetable oil and the atomic hydrogen will immediately form new bonds with its most liked partner, the carbon inside the Carbon Donor Reactor, the resulting gas obtained is petroleum gases ranging from C1 to C8 that is stored in a buffer storage tank. By composition, the finally formed gas is chemically same as gases obtained from petroleum or fossil sources, thus we have be called it organic petroleum gas, to differentiate its source . Under normal room temperature, the obtained hydrocarbons are in gaseous state and are highly inflammable. It can be liquefied by increasing the pressure and/or reducing temperature appropriately.
Clean Cooking Petroleum Gas
Combinations of different oils and by altering the process parameters, it is possible to produce different gases ranging between C1 to C8 so far. The composition of the gas shown below mainly contains propane and butane and is nearest to domestic cooking and automotive gas currently obtained from fossil crude oil. These gases can be liquefied under moderate pressure at room temperature.

Applications of this discovery and invention
People can now make cooking gas at home without the dependence of governments. Besides the above, the invention can provide high calorie fuel for heating their homes and other energy needs at a fraction of cost to millions of poor families all over the world. A few litres of clean drinking water, 500 grams of used vegetable oil and 5 hours of sun light a day is all that is required for a whole month's cooking needs of a family. There is no need to change the existing LPG infrastructure for use of this new petroleum gas in cooking or automobiles.
What can this discovery and invention mean to the world?
Before we think of the world, let's think of India. According to the 2011 census of India, 33.6 million (28.5%) Indian households used LPG as cooking fuel in 2011. The Indian government subsidizes Rs. 568/- for every cylinder of LP gas sold. So, 33.6 million households each using even 10 LP gas cylinder a year, will amount to 336 million cylinders, amounting to about 191 billion rupees a year or around US$. 3 Billion Annually by way of cooking gas subsidies alone, think of the other common man's energy needs. The benefits to countries like India are huge.
