Prevalence of kidney diseases in Ethiopia: 

In developing countries such as Ethiopia, chronic kidney disease is a growing problem. The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rising due to increase in risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. In Africa, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) has poor outcomes; treatment considered the norm in medically advanced countries is limited in Africa. Few governments cover the cost of renal replacement therapy. For a variety of reasons, primarily financial, availability and accessibility, medical care is inadequate, especially for expensive chronic illness therapy such as dialysis and renal transplantation.

Addis Ababa/ Mekelle: In an attempt to create awareness about kidney-related disorders amongst the community and also train the doctors on pre-transplant management of patients on Dialysis, Columbia Asia Hospital from Bangalore, India is conducting a screening camp for the patients and a Surgical Workshop for doctors from Ayder Hospital at Mekelle.

The screening camp is for those who are suffering from renal diseases, hypertension and diabetes, which are primary causes for renal failure.

The surgical workshop and screening camp will be organized from April 7 to April 12 at Ayder Hospital in Mekelle and at St. Paul Hospital at Addis Ababa.
