DesiClik Set to Log Into India's Booming $400 Million Online Gifting Space With Strategic Alliances

Make in India gives a boost for the US-based e-commerce marketplace to put its stamp in the country's growing online gifting segment 

A US-based e-commerce marketplace is entering India owing to the country's gifting market potential and opportunities offered by Make in India. DesiClik, the largest US-based vertical e-commerce marketplace specialising in Indian products, is now entering the country through strategic partnerships.

This means that nearly three million Indians living across the US can now send gifts to their families and friends back home in India conveniently. It also enables a large number of Indian vendors to benefit from a rapidly growing online gifting market. The gifting market in India is pegged at $30 billion, of which $400 million is generated from online gifting alone. 

In an effort to strategically position itself in the Indian market, DesiClik has tied up with IGP (formerly known as Indian Gifts Portal), one of India's largest multi-category gifting companies, and aims to join hands with more players in the future to offer its customers a wider offering of products in India, explains Deepak Agarwal, Co-founder, DesiClik.

"With a sole focus on Indian products, our business promotes Make in India at a global scale. In next five years, we plan to become the Amazon for ethnic Indian products outside of India. Our expansion into the Indian market will help us tap into the online gifting space here and help our partners and vendors source locally," says Deepak.

A new section on the website will be dedicated just for gifting to India. "We are starting with a few product categories such as flowers, chocolates, cakes, sweets and more that are festive or occasion-driven and will expand the product offering over the next few months," he adds. "The tie-up will also enable our customers outside of the US - in countries such as Canada, UK and Australia - also to send gifts to India." DesiClik is scheduled to expand into Canada in the second quarter of 2018; with more than 1 million Indians living in Canada, a huge potential market is waiting to be tapped.

IGP, one of India's largest gifting platforms, will be providing its highly curated gifting and festival catalog to the customers of DesiClik. "IGP has a strong infrastructure and well-established network in place in more than 350 cities, which will enable DesiClik customers to send gifts to their families in India within a few hours of placing the order," assures Tarun Joshi, CEO and Co-founder of IGP.

With this tie-up, DesiClik will be able to offer its customers a one-place shopping experience for all their requirements - be it to buy Indian products for their needs in the US, or to send gifts to their near and dear ones back home in India, reiterates Deepak. This will complement DesiClik's B2B plans for India too, set to roll out in the third quarter of 2018. The portal plans to connect buyers from the US with sellers in India, offering a complete range of B2B solutions. The new platform will essentially be a B2B marketplace for business goods and supplies that will help suppliers and exporters in India and businesses in the US to trade with each other.

DesiClik is also developing a fulfilment centre in the US East Coast by the end of the year. Set to open in the last quarter of 2018, the fulfilment centre will have a warehouse that will support sellers from the US to stock up their merchandise. This will help Indian vendors who want to get their orders fulfilled by them.

DesiClik is looking to raise $1 million from investors as it looks to scale up its operations and expand into new markets. The investment is aimed at building an offshore team in India, towards technological upgrades and developing intellectual property. The funding will also be used for the development of the B2B platform in India, the fulfilment centre in the US and expansion into Canada in addition to an enhanced focus on marketing.
