It is for the first time in eastern India that a successful scarless endoscopic surgery has taken place in Paras HMRI, Raja Bazaar, Patna. A woman who complained of shortness of breath and a sore throat underwent a right thyroid surgery through this method. Contrary to the earlier method of endoscopic surgery this method makes use of a binocular camera system that helps prevent scars. It has proved to be a boon in disguise (particularly) to women who prefer this latest scarless method of endoscopic surgery to the old methods. The operation was carried out successfully by Dr. Rajiv Sharan, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology and Chief, Head and Neck Oncology, Paras HMRI Hospital. Dr. Sharan has learnt the scarless surgery technique by its pioneer, Dr. Luong. Dr. Luong's surgical technique has been well-known and drawn much attention from doctors across countries. He is considered to be one of the outstanding doctors of the health sector of Vietnam. He is an expert in the field of endoscopic surgery and takes credit for having successfully performed around 5000 surgeries.

This technique leaves no large cut on the neck as is the case with the conventional method of operation. The old method also lacks precision that often results in complications such as voice changes in patients. Not just that it leaves behind highly visible neck scars that look ugly. Patients also fear chances of developing traffic scars or keloid. Keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops around a wound. It can only be removed after surgery. However scarless endoscopic thyroid surgery lessens the chances of such post-operative complications. Dr. Sharan explains how the surgery is carried out - an incision of 1 cm is made under one of the armpits and another incision of ½ cm under the other. This is followed by a third opening on the chest, which does not remain visible post operation. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is then made to pass through these openings into the patient's body.

"Had the surgery not been performed on time the swelling would have developed into a cancerous gland. Before the operation, the FNC report did not show signs of cancer but it is always advisable to get the lump/gland removed," said Dr. Sharan. The woman who underwent surgery has reportedly not faced health issues after the procedure.
