An expert on Vaishnavite and Varahi icons, she was the Vice President of the Indian Art History Congress. She captured her extensive work in the field of iconography in six scholarly books, which include Spread of Vaishnavism in Gujarat up to 1600 AD, Images of Varahi: An Iconographic Study, and Iconography of Vinayaka, Ganapati, and Ganesa. Her third book, Varaha Images in Madhya Pradesh, won the silver medal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay for the best book of the year in 1988.

She championed many social causes. She played a key role in making the Red Cross Society in Andhra Pradesh an effective instrument of humanitarian service. She was responsible for setting up several blood banks in Hyderabad and elsewhere. She was immensely popular for her unlimited optimism and infectious laughter. She effortlessly cut through all social boundaries to connect with people who needed her help and support. Despite access to privilege and power, she remained an extremely simple person throughout her life.

Dr. Haripriya Rangarajan is survived by her husband, son, daughter, and four grandchildren.
