The National Awards for Manufacturing Competitiveness (NAMC) 2013-14 concluded at Chennai on 6th June 2014 with a gala award event. The first edition of NAMC awards honored 14 leading manufacturing companies from various industry sectors across the country from Himachal Pradesh to Tamilnadu. The companies that won gold, silver and bronze awards in this year's program represent the best in manufacturing competitiveness.

Greater Noida based New Holland Fiat (India) Pvt Ltd., a leading tractor and farm mechanization equipment manufacturer bagged the NAMC apex award. While Engineering major L & T-MHI Turbine Generators Private Ltd's Hazira facility felicitated with runners-up award. The Gold award winners include top manufacturing units of Hindustan Zinc Ltd (Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd - Farm Equipment Sector (Nagpur & Rudrapur), Greaves Cotton Limited (Ranipet) and USV ltd (Baddi).
The Silver winners include Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd (Muzaffarnagar), Hindustan Zinc Ltd (Dariba Smelter unit), Indofil Industries Ltd (Dahej), Rockman Industries (Haridwar), Fenesta Building Systems (Kota). The Bronze winners National Peroxide (Kalyan) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporate Ltd (Silvassa).
Padma Bhushan Dr. A Sivathanu Pillai, Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO and CEO & MD, BrahMos Aerospace graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and presented the awards to the winning companies. Dr. Pillai addressed the manufacturing stalwarts gathered at the event on enhancing Indian manufacturing competitiveness. He advised the business class to cater to growing needs through innovative products and adopting latest technologies. He stressed on enhancing manufacturing skills, focus on quality and cost competitiveness and adherence to timely delivery as the key priorities to enhance competitiveness.
Mr Anand Louie, Director International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM) also emphasized the importance of developing tailor-made strategies to compete in the global market space.
The highlight of the event included a catchy panel discussion on the topic "What has to be done to drive top talent to the manufacturing sector". Professor Easwar Krishna Iyer, Director Admissions from Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai moderated the discussion. The panelists Mr. Rakesh Agarwal (Unit Head - Hindustan Zinc Limited - Dariba Smelting Complex), Mr. Abhaykumar Srivastava (AVP - USV Limited, Baddi), Mr. K.N. Rao (Head - Energy & Environment, ACC Limited) and Mr. Anand Louie (Director-IRIM) participated in the discussion and shared their views.
The National Awards for Manufacturing Competitiveness (NAMC) was instituted by International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM) in the year 2013 with a vision to appraise and applaud the manufacturing competitiveness of Indian organizations and encourage them in their process of becoming world class.
IRIM, as an unbiased third party, evaluated and rated each company on its unique Manufacturing Competitiveness Index. This rating was achieved through a structured assessment of the manufacturing facility on 10 indicators of manufacturing competitiveness, which are building blocks behind the calculation of this index. The assessment was customized to each facility by assigning unique weightage to each of these indicators based on organization's priorities to become more competitive.
