Laptop distribution exercise carried out by governments, notably Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments as part of the poll promises, has a potential to be an important interventions that can be made by governments in improving skills, knowledge, employability, and confidence amongst the youth.
These are findings of a survey carried out by India Opportunity Advisors, a Delhi-based strategy advisory and consulting firm. It carried out an impact survey in the cities of Merrut, Varanasi, Kanpur and Lucknow, that has revealed that laptop distribution has largely hit the mark in its goals. There is a tremendous improvement in the knowledge, skill and confidence level of the students to whom laptops were provided for free in Uttar Pradesh. Everyone surveyed felt that laptops have improved their knowledge and awareness from before. More than 80% of the students agreed that their employability has increased from before, with more than 30% believing it has increased much more than before. Access to laptops has also empowered the students to think more in terms of entrepreneurship and computer jobs as career options steering them away from government and bank jobs, which were pre-laptop ownership favorite.
Laptops are also proving to be a very effective tool for women empowerment as the women who have been provided with the laptop have seen a sharp increase in career focus. Now more women feel empowered to look for jobs in computer-related areas and the number of undecided or don't knows about career options reducing by more than 90%.
Education and web surfing is the most useful aspect of laptops with more than 70% of the respondents using the laptop primarily for education purposes.
