Jaipur Showcasing Rajasthan's Intellectual Heritage

In a first of its kind initiative in the country - 'Living Arts of Rajasthan', Jaipur has turned into an open art gallery. The project showcases tribal and folk art all over the city on hoardings, unipoles, bus shelters as well as on hop-on hop-off buses. Taking a pride in its rich cultural heritage, the project honours the tribal arts and artists across the State.

The vibrant display of paintings and illustrations are capturing the heart of Jaipurites as well as the tourists. For the art aficionados of the city, the project serves as a great medium of cultural display. The Jaipurites and the tourists are admiring the initiative, the art and the artists, which provide a humbling moment of serenity amidst the bustling city crowd.

The project was launched on Gandhi Jayanti yesterday, with over 70 display sites showcasing the 'Jogi' art. This art form finds its origin in Magriwada of Sirohi district. Interestingly, the art form is practised today only by the members of a nuclear family, making it an 'unseen art' in need of promotion and recognition. The artists Ms. Teju Ganesh Jogi, Ms. Soni Jogi, Ms. Sangeeta Jogi, Mr. Bablu Jogi and Mr. Raju Jogi were especially invited to Jaipur to create the pieces for this project. During the 3-day stay, the artists created independent illustrations of 'Jogi' art, in both colour as well as black and white forms. Each hoarding carries the name and photograph of the artist, giving them the acknowledgement they rightfully deserve.

The unique initiative is envisioned by the Chief Minister, Ms. Vasundhara Raje to encourage and promote the rich heritage of tribal and folk art and its practising artisans.

The initiative is managed by Jaipur Nagar Nigam, with cooperation of 'Must Art Gallery' in Delhi. The upcoming phases will display other tribal arts inherent to Rajasthan. Each art form is expected to be showcased around the city for at least 30-45 days. A permanent exhibition site and other innovative projects have also been proposed to support such art and artists in the State.

Jaipur Nagar Nigam has also created a special cell for the art lovers to get in touch with the artists. The contact details of the cell are provided on the hoardings. The project will also financially strengthen the artists through new prospects. As most of the artists come from a humble background with little or no business and marketing skills, the cell will serve as a point of coordination between the artists and buyers.

With Jaipur being a famous international tourist destination, the endeavour aims to publicize the authentic tribal and folk arts as well as its artists in the State. The attempt expects a worldwide recognition of the tribal and folk arts through exposure to inbound tourists in the city. The hoardings and bus shelters make the art display easily visible to all, assimilating it in the city's lifestyle and culture.
