KIIT School Of Management (KSOM) Returns With Impressive Placement Figures in 2015
BHUBANESWAR, India, July 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
- More Than 100 Companies for Campus Recruitment
- More Than 360 Jobs Offered
- More Than 30% Raise in Average CTC Packages Compared to Last Year
It has been 22 years since KIIT School of Management (KSOM), Bhubaneswar was raised as a part of the multi-disciplinary KIIT University. Starting out as Institute of Business Administration and Training way back in 1993, KSOM is amongst the earliest MBA institutes of the country, but in the last 2 years it has also been noticeable for its commendable all-round performance. Particularly in 2015, the placement record, average salary offered to students, and the number of admission applications has been quite noteworthy. With a strength of 240 students for the regular MBA, and 117 students in dual-degree MBA programme, KSOM offered the industry a pool of 360 budding managers to select from. By the 29th of May 2015, the number of job offers had surpassed 360.
"This success is primarily due to a shift in our education philosophy," says Mr. Anil Bajpai, Director, KSOM. Ever since taking over as the Director of KSOM (KIIT School of Management, Bhubaneswar) about a year-and-half back, Mr. Anil Bajpai has been consciously steering the institution towards a multi-disciplinary MBA instead of creating domain specialist MBA graduates. A product of IIM-Ahmedabad, Mr. Anil Bajpai is known to be an integral part of the growth story of the telecom industry in India having served as the COO of Vodafone (MP & Chattisgarh), and CEO of Reliance Infocomm (MP, Chattisgarh and Odisha), apart from a leadership position in Airtel, during his sterling career. A B.Sc. (Physics) from St. Stephens and a B.E. (Electrical Tech. & Electronics) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Mr. Bajpai started out in the semi-conductors industry before shifting to the telecom industry after IIM-A. Widely regarded for his ability of building from scratch and managing huge telecom and semi-conductor projects, Mr. Bajpai's expertise is widely used by major players in the industry, till date.
"Instead of focusing on specialisation, we had taken a conscious decision to build on a broad-based management education. At KSOM our pedagogy today is aimed to create CEOs for the Industry, and not Heads of Departments," he added.
The feedback of this approach has found favor with the recruiters. Repeat recruiters from last year were especially impressed by the distinct change in the quality of the graduating batch. Mr. Bajpai attributes this to the changed parameters for admissions to KSOM and increased focus on soft skills.
"Communication," says Mr. Bajpai, "is the cornerstone of managerial success. If a manager is unable to communicate well, there is no point in topping or anything else. Right at the intake level, we are assessing an aspirant's ability to understand and synthesize information, and produce a possible solution based on the data inputs that we give them. Eventually, it boils down to employability. Hence we look at GD and PI abilities before we actually offer admission, since these have a very high weightage during recruitment process."
Going by numbers, KSOM has registered a significant 30% increase from the average salary offered to the previous MBA batch. If indications are something to go by, this is only the beginning. KSOM has been relentlessly pushing the agenda of diversity; showcasing its strong, all-round MBA curriculum in media across the country.
"Owing to a number of factors, the intake of mathematics and engineering oriented students was quite low in KSOM. This year, the percentage has improved considerably, and within the next 2 years it'll be at par with other leading institutes in the country. We've also consciously been working on our student mix. In the current batches we've begun experiencing the impact of a broader base of students coming in from Delhi, Pune, Karnataka and other states from far North and South India," he added.
Over the next year, KSOM will be attempting its next big shift - toward a learning-oriented teaching process involving a lot of non-classroom activity, and discussions. "The content in the classroom", says Mr. Bajpai, "will be driven largely by the students. We hope to score very high on the learning process."
To support this, KSOM is in the midst of a faculty revamp. In recent times, nearly half the KSOM faculty has been pooled in from high pedigree institutes like the IIMs.
In some of its sweeping changes, KSOM had removed a number of "outdated" electives and brought in specific ones. As a logical next step, the faculty is now deep into "overhauling" the course materials. The revamped course will be an "industry job-based" kind of curriculum.
With a bevy of bigwigs ranging from Reliance Communications, Aircel, Birlas, TCS, Mahindra Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra etc., KSOM has garnered an enviable list of recruiters. Clearly, with the kind of activity lined up in the year, looks like aspirants to KSOM will only be joining it at just the right time.
