LEAP Skills Academy Launches RPL Program for Tourism and Hospitality Sector Under Aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and NSDC
NEW DELHI, March 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --
With the aim of fulfilling the Prime Minister's 'Skill India Mission', LEAP Skills Academy launched the Recognition of Prior Learning program to be conducted across the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and Haryana.
The RPL launch event was graced by the Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dr. K.P. Krishnan, and the MD and CEO of the National Skill Development Corporation, Mr. Manish Kumar.
The event was also attended by renowned academicians and business leaders such as Devesh Kapur, Director at the Center for the Advanced Study of India and Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania; Venguswamy Ramaswamy, Global Head of TCS iON; Dr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President and Chief Executive of Centre for Policy Research, and Mayank Kachhwaha, Co-founder of Indialends.
LEAP Skills Academy is a skill development organization based out of New Delhi, incorporated in the year 2013 and headed by Megha Aggarwal, CEO and Co-founder, and Ankit Durga, COO and Co-founder. LEAP which stands for Learning, Employability and Progress, is an impact-oriented organization and has played a major role in imparting industry-relevant skills, as well as life-long skills to the youth of the geography where LEAP operates in.
"A lot of what Megha, the CEO of LEAP Skills is doing, and what we are trying to do is actually trying to repair or make good the failure of the state in its role as a regulator in these sectors," said Dr. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
During a panel discussion on the 'Skills landscape in India' at the launch event, conversation ensued around the role of the different stakeholders - Government, employers, industry bodies, training partners and trainees - to address the challenges and identify best practices to ensure the smooth and successful implementation of the Skill India Mission and the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
"We have lots and lots of people. It is one of our biggest assets, but it is one asset we are not developing well enough. We should think of labor markets that are global, not just local," said Devesh Kapur, on the issue of skills and providing training to the masses.
LEAP has been focusing on enhancing the employability of youth engaged in secondary formal education across tier-2 and 3 cities (engineering, under-graduate and polytechnic disciplines) and has worked with over 3,500 trainees till date.
Industry requires this focus on employability skills as well, as evidenced by Mayank Kachhawa's, Co-founder of Indialends, quote about the lack of skilled talent available to growing start-ups in the Indian economy: "Hiring people with the right skills has proved to be one of the biggest challenges while scaling up."
LEAP will assist the NSDC in certifying over 3,000 employees engaged in the Tourism and Hospitality sector in the year 2017.
