Manipal University, Manipal, emerged as the top private university in the country in a survey by Education World published in its May edition. The magazine has covered the top 100 universities, top 100 engineering colleges and 50 best B-Schools. With top ratings in four of the seven parameters of excellence, Manipal University was announced as the best by 4,465 sample respondents in the Education World India Private University Rankings (EWIPUR) 2016. In the ranking last year, Manipal University was behind BITS, Pilani and IIIT, Hyderabad. While Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, has been ranked sixth.

The four parameters that Manipal University was better than the rest were - faculty welfare and development, competence of faculty, infrastructure and facilities and research and innovation. About a month ago, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal (MCOPS), was ranked the top pharmacy college in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), approved by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
An elated Chancellor, Dr Ramdas M Pai said, "We are aiming to make a mark in the world rankings and this is the beginning. Hopefully, it will not be too long before we figure in global rankings." He was happy that the university has jumped to the top spot from the third position last year. "I am extremely happy that we are the best in four of the seven parameters. Everyone has worked to make this possible," he said.
