Most organisations claim that bringing women into the cybersecurity profession is a priority, yet female participation has remained static since 2004, at about 11%, according to the latest Global Information Security Workforce Study report developed by Frost & Sullivan for The Center for Cyber Safety and Education™ and the Executive Women's Forum on Information Security, Risk Management & Privacy. Despite the talk, the needle measuring women in the profession is not moving forward. This suggests that initiatives to attract women aren't proactive enough or that the profession isn't as committed to building a balanced and sustainable workforce as it claims to be.
"Cybersecurity is one of the most important, yet misunderstood and underappreciated professions in the world," comments Jarad Carleton, Principal Consultant, Digital Transformation, Frost & Sullivan. "It has near-zero unemployment and a worker shortfall that grows every year—a gap projected to reach 1.8 million by 2022. Given the talent shortfall, and the apparent attention, it is difficult to understand why more women are not attracted to the field. If they were, the workforce gap could be reversed.
