Research Day at SRM University - Cutting Edge Scientific Ideas Come Only From Brilliant Minds
CHENNAI, March 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Stressing that the significance and value of scientific research is not measurable and that the devices available today are as a result of basic scientific research, Padma Vibushan Professor P. Rama Rao, the Chairman of the Governing Council of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore argued that the Manhattan Project launched by the United States was perhaps the quintessential example of grand synthesis of knowledge, investment manpower under a magnificent leader. "That is what a project is all about" Prof Rao told faculty, researchers and students on the occasion of SRM University's Research Day. "None of the cutting edge scientific ideas involved big capital or by government but by brilliant minds," the leading scientist of India maintained.
"I was delighted when SRM University's Chancellor and President spoke about the value of research and publications. I have not heard about these themes or even Research Day in many universities. SRM scores very uniquely both in terms of a Research Institute and in having a Research Day," Prof. Rao said. "If there are more and more researchers, India has the potential of putting out 25 percent of graduate students (post graduate) in the world," he added. "America excels in individual freedom and pursuit of happiness as a key to their achievement and if we were to ask the question as to why we are not achieving like that of the United States and my answer would be that the United States created the world's greatest universities," he said.
There are at least three aspects to higher learning that would have to be factored in argued Professor Biswanath Mukherjee, Distinguished Professor of Computer Science from the University of California at Davis, USA-leadership and a ability to have a discourse with people whom we do not agree with; education and in the ease with which we handle situations that are not generally taught as a part of course work; and entertaining contrarian views. "The pre-requisite to extra-ordinary achievement is extra-ordinary effort. Not everybody is a super star. Achieve to your potential and beyond," Dr. Mukherjee told the audience.
"We are celebrating a number of events at this University that are quite common. But Research Day is special. We stand apart from others," said the Founder Chancellor of SRM University, Dr. T.R. Paarivendhar. "These events are celebrated to motivate and encourage you. Research must develop so that we can attain higher levels of glory," he added. Noting that the practice of celebrating Research Day has become a feature of SRM University that is appreciated in the academic community in India and overseas, the President of SRM University, Dr. R.P. Sathyanarayan, said that Research Day is not a one-day affair to exhibit the research acumen. It should be an ambition to be involved in research year-round and a daily phenomenon. Research should become the habit and character of SRM University.
Research Day at SRM University is celebrated to provide an opportunity for students to showcase and exhibit their burning aptitude for research as well as giving a chance to the student community to get a comprehensive knowledge on the diverse research activities being carried out in the Institution. It is the time for enthusiastic students to present their research work before a host of other researchers.
SRM University has been observing Research Day since 2012 with the first edition inaugurated by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to Govt. of India on 28th February 2012. Dr. Kishan Lal, President, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was the Chief Guest for the 2nd edition of Research Day held on 1st March 2013. Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, ISRO was the Chief Guest for the Research Day held on 27th February 2014. Dr. T.K. Chandrasekhar, Secretary, Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB). Govt. of India was the Chief Guest for the Research Day held on 27th February 2015.
Every year, about 500 abstracts are being presented by students and research scholars from about 40 Departments of the faculties of Engineering and Technology, Science and Humanities, Medical and Health Sciences. This year 512 papers were presented by students, research and faculty members of SRM University with gold and silver medals awarded for the best papers.
