Surat Marathon Company Invites Registrations for Surat Night Marathon 2014 - The Biggest Night Marathon in Asia

Asia's biggest night marathon and one of the country's largest marathon events is back - Surat Night Marathon 2014 will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Surat. Padmashri Shri. Milkha Singh is the Brand Ambassador for the 2nd edition of the Surat Night Marathon. The new addition this year is the Surat Full Night Marathon of 42.195 km.
Key events include the Surat Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K run, Surti Lala Masti Run (5 km), Spirit of Surat Run (1 km), Senior Citizen Run, Corporate Relay and Themed Costume Run.
The country's biggest running event is supported by the Surat District Administration, Surat Municipal Corporation, Surat Police and the Business Community of Surat. The event is managed by Destiny Group Entertainers Pvt. Ltd. and also supported by Agrawal Vikas Trust.
In the recent years, marathons have established themselves as the single largest community sports event in the country. It has become a way of life - an occasion to celebrate health, the spirit of the city. Citizens come together for the common good of the society. The first edition of Surat Night Marathon was a runaway success with more than 33,000 people running and over 5,00,000 people lining the race route to cheer and celebrate the runners. The funds that were raised at the first edition were used for various charities and humanitarian projects.

Announcing Shri. Milkha Singh as the Brand Ambassador of the Surat Night Marathon 2014, Mr. Rakesh Asthana, Commissioner of Police shared, "We are very proud to announce Shri. Milkha Singh, the Flying Sikh of India as our Brand Ambassador. Shri. Milkha Singhji is one of the finest athletes India has ever produced and it's an absolute honour to have him as part of this noble initiative."

Apart from these central themes to raise funds for charity, runners can run and raise funds for other NGO's registered with 'The Surat Marathon Company'.
Talking about the Surat Night Marathon 2014, Mr. M. K. Das, Commissioner, Surat Municipal Corporation shared, "We are pleased to announce the second edition of this hugely popular Surat Night Marathon. Internationally, marathons are part of a cosmopolitan culture. I am proud to say that we are now in the same league as other important cities hosting a Full Marathon. The Surat Night marathon was mainly conceived to create awareness and address the city's key humanitarian projects. With the response we received last year, we expect a larger cross-section of the city participating in the marathon. We extend our full support to the event and will ensure that every aspect of the marathon goes on smoothly."
Sharing his views on running and being fit, Mr. Neeraj, Race Director for Surat Night Marathon 2014 said, "Running a marathon takes dedication, will and months of practice. Running is enjoyed by some in groups, by others alone. But great joy can be found in running for a cause, which is what we are striving to do. Taking something as simple as running and attaching it to a greater cause, gives a chance for everyone to give back to society. The second edition of the Surat Night Marathon will witness 7 categories of races including:
- The Full Marathon of 42.195 km - open to anyone above the age of 18 years from India and abroad.
- The Half Marathon of 21.0975 km - open to anyone above the age of 18 years from India or abroad.
- 10K run - open to anyone above the age of 18 years from India or abroad.
- The Surti Lala Masti Run (5 km) - a fun run to celebrate the spirit of the city and open to anyone above the age of 12 yrs.
- Themed Costume Run (5 km) - Part of the Surti Lala Masti Run. Theme to be announced. Open to anyone above the age of 12 yrs.
- Spirit of Surat Run (1 km) - For the Physically Challenged. This will be by invitation only.
- Senior Citizens run (2.5 km) - open to everyone above the age of 60 years on race day.
About The Surat Marathon Company
The Surat Marathon Company - a section 25 company - has been formed with the support of prominent citizens of Surat for the sole purpose of raising funds for charity through the event 'Surat Night Marathon'. The workings and efforts of the company are further governed and supervised by a committee formed by prominent members of Surat society.
Section 25 companies are those companies which are formed for the sole purpose of promoting commerce, art, science, religion, charity or any other useful object and have been granted a licence by the central government recognizing them as such. Thus, there are three criteria for determining whether a particular company is section 25 company or not:
1) Its objects should be only to promote commerce, art, science, religion, charity or any other useful object.
2) It should intend to apply its profits or other incomes only in promoting its objects; and
3) The Central government, should have granted a license to such a company recognizing them as such, these types of companies can be either public company or private company having a limited liability.
