BANGALORE, September 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Mr. Imran Khan, a visionary entrepreneur, has founded India's 1st online sports academy vision-olympics, under the aegis of Vision Olympics Foundation, a non-profit trust with a vision to win 20+ medals for India in Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Here, more than 40 sports have been listed. By clicking on a few buttons any Indian athlete from any background can register for their choice of sport.

Mr. Imran is putting his maximum efforts to set this vision for 130 billion Indians, as he believes India can make it possible when all Indians have 1 vision.

To make it possible they are launching India Bike Rally on 5th November 2016 in 3 phases, where a team of bikers travel across India to spread awareness and to set this vision for India.

1st phase - Bangalore to Delhi and Delhi to Bangalore Bike Rally will be launched on 5th November 2016 where they are covering Bangalore, Goa, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Delhi, Lucknow, Indore and Hyderabad.

2nd Phase - 3 days South India Bike Rally covers Bangalore, Chennai and Trivandrum, and 3 days North India Bike Rally covers Srinagar, Shimla and Dehradun will be launched on 26th January 2017.

3rd Phase 5 days East India Bike Rally covers Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, and 8 days North East Bike Rally covers Dispur Assam - Itanagar Arunachal Pradesh, Kohima - Nagaland, Imphal - Manipur, Aizwal - Mizoram, Agartala - Tripura, Shillong - Meghalaya and Gangtok - Sikkim on 26th February 2017.

Mr. Imran is planning to get more than 20,000 athletes registered across India through this activity. Thereby finalising a team of the best 500 athletes to put them under Vision Olympic Sports academy where athletes can avail rigorous international level education based sports training under the guidance of world's best coaches. This academy will take care of athlete's academics with sports to make them successful leaders.

"I believe quality training for right talent can change the game. Unless there is a synergized sports culture, we will never win a string of medals. A fundamental overhaul is needed and that too urgently," explained Mr. Imran Khan.

As per Mr. Khan's research, almost every country is facing common problems like lack of sports culture, scandals in sports associations, management issues, fiscal incentives, poverty, omnipresent inequality, sports integrity, disciplinary attitude like doping and lack of practice, etc. Only two parameters can make the difference i.e talent and funding.

Now, there are four possible scenarios here:

  1. Low on talent, low on funding
  2. Low on talent, high on funding
  3. High on talent, low on funding
  4. High on talent, high on funding

Let's look at each of these scenarios.

1. Low on talent, low on funding

This is the worst possible scenario and definitely not the case with India. Even in such a scenario, if the competition also falls in the same category, the best of the lot wins.

The SAF Games is an example. Look at India's performance. Note the absence of developed nations and Asian giants.

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
    1 India (IND) 188 90 30 308
    2 Sri Lanka (SRI) 25 63 98 186
    3 Pakistan (PAK) 12 37 57 106
    4 Afghanistan (AFG) 7 9 19 35
    5 Bangladesh (BAN) 4 15 56 75
    6 Nepal (NEP) 3 23 34 60
    7 Maldives (MDV) 0 2 1 3
    8 Bhutan (BHU) 0 1 15 16
    Total 239 240 310 789

2. Low on talent, high on funding

This is probably the exact opposite scenario that India is facing. And there is a case where a lot of funding can sometimes outperform talent and a case where talent sometimes is missed out due to lack of funding.

The Commonwealth Games is an example. India is the best performing developing nation. Some developed nations manage to outperform India purely on the basis of better funding and training available to them. Note the absence of USA, Asian giants (China, Japan, and South Korea) and most European nations.

Look at how much the UK spent for each Olympic medal - How many millions each Olympic medal has really cost Britain. That kind of funding can turn above average talent to podium contenders.

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
    1 England (ENG) 58 59 57 174
    2 Australia (AUS) 49 42 46 137
    3 Canada (CAN) 32 16 34 82
    4 Scotland (SCO)* 19 15 19 53
    5 India (IND) 15 30 19 64
    6 New Zealand (NZL) 14 14 17 45
    7 South Africa (RSA) 13 10 17 40
    8 Nigeria (NGR) 11 11 14 36
    9 Kenya (KEN) 10 10 5 25
    10 Jamaica (JAM) 10 4 8 22
    Total 261 261 302 824

3. High on talent, low on funding

This is probably the best fit for the state of sports in India right now. India has talent, but not enough funding to take it to a level where athletes can compete on a global stage.

The Asian Games can be looked at as an example. In terms of total medals won, India is joint fifth on the table behind the big three (China, Japan and South Korea) and Kazakhstan who also have the funding to go with the talent. However, the ratio of Gold to Silver to Bronze shows that India lacks that killer edge that is required to go from Bronze to Gold. That is partly due to the lack of funding and training facilities. Again, note that USA and Europe are not part of the games.

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
    1 China (CHN) 151 108 85 344
    2 South Korea (KOR) 79 70 79 228
    3 Japan (JPN) 47 77 77 201
    4 Kazakhstan (KAZ) 28 23 33 84
    5 Iran (IRI) 21 18 18 57
    6 Thailand (THA) 12 7 28 47
    7 North Korea (PRK) 11 11 14 36
    8 India (IND) 11 10 36 57
    9 Chinese Taipei (TPE) 10 18 23 51
    10 Qatar (QAT) 10 0 4 14
    Total 436 436 575 1447

4. High on talent, high on funding

This is the ideal scenario, or the Magic Quadrant, for success. Now we need to make it possible, otherwise the same result will continue for few more decades. Only when this scenario is met can Indian athletes compete and win on a global stage like the Olympics.

    2016 Summer Olympics medal table
Rank NOC Gold Silver Bronze Total
    1 United States (USA) 46 37 38 121
    2 Great Britain (GBR) 27 23 17 67
    3 China (CHN) 26 18 26 70
    4 Russia (RUS) 19 18 19 56
    5 Germany (GER) 17 10 15 42
    6 Japan (JPN) 12 8 21 41
    7 France (FRA) 10 18 14 42
    8 South Korea (KOR) 9 3 9 21
    9 Italy (ITA) 8 12 8 28
    10 Australia (AUS) 8 11 10 29
    11-78 Remaining NOCs 125 149 183 457
    Total (87 NOCs) 307 307 360 974

Source: 2016 Summer Olympics

Look at how the developed world dominates the Olympics medals tally. Also, note how China has a dedicated program that has enabled it to get into that table. Look at the Olympic medals table before Barcelona 1992 and you won't see China in the top 10 of the medals tally. India needs a similar transformation to achieve this dream.

In spite of having many programs like Target Olympic Podium, Olympic Gold Quest and other similar programs, we are failing to bring any change.

What can India do?

-Acquire right talent: There is a need of a support system that should enable even a village-level sportsperson to find a way to register for Olympic Games. Vision Olympics Foundation launched online sports academy vision-olympic.in to fill this gap. With the help of this we can get the pool of right talent.

-Quality Training: There is a need to provide world class quality training to this talent under the guidance of world's best coaches.

However, the expectations should be realistic. 20+ medals in 4 years is an ambitious goal. To achieve this goal, Vision Olympics Foundation is planning to propose public-private partnerships to Government of India to utilise the existing sports infrastructure and services. They are also planning many fundraising activities to meet the need of quality training.
