West China Hospital to build new hospital in Chengdu Tianfu New Area

CHENGDU, China, Dec. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- West China Hospital of Sichuan University, a prestigious medical center located in Chengdu, Sichuan province, signed an agreement on Dec. 5 with the Chengdu Management Committee of Tianfu New Area, China's 11th national-level development area, to build a brand new hospital in the area.

The West China Tianfu Hospital is designed to be a modern comprehensive tertiary first-class public hospital with a complete set of disciplines, efficient operation and management, as well as unique characteristics, according to the agreement.

The Chengdu Management Committee of Tianfu New Area will be in charge of the investment and construction, supervision and examination, as well as institution setting of the new hospital, while West China Hospital will fully participate in the design and construction of the hospital, and be responsible for the management and operation of its medical business.

With a total investment of about 4 billion yuan ($568.4 million), the hospital will be located in the core area of Tianfu New Area. It will be equipped with 1,200 beds, 2,000 parking spaces, 14 medical centers, 68 operating rooms, and a helipad on the roof.

The hospital is expected to be completed and put into use in 2021. It is expected to become a domestic leading and international first-class medical center after completion.

Li Weimin, president of West China Hospital, said that the joint effort of the two sides to build West China Tianfu Hospital is an important move to implement the Healthy China strategy and a specific measure to implement medical reform.

The construction and operation of the hospital will further meet the medical needs of people in West China, and will also provide a solid foundation for the high-quality development of Tianfu New Area, he added.

Tianfu New Area will take advantage of West China Tianfu Hospital to build an integrated medical and health service system that covers prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and healthcare, striving to build the new area into a medical service hub that faces the "Belt and Road" countries and regions.

West China Hospital has ranked first in the country for five consecutive years on the "Scientific Impact List of Chinese Hospitals." It also ranked 38th in the world and first in China on the Nature INDEX list.
