Dr. Rangarajan shared and enlightened the audience with his perspectives on the past and current economic scenarios of India, his experiences and the challenges he faced during his tenure as the RBI Governor and a policymaker traversing through the various pivotal roles he held across myriad governments. Reminding everyone that India has successfully completed 25 years of liberalization and economic reforms, Dr. Rangarajan gave a brief introduction to the process of economic reforms in the country, the circumstances under which a need arose to introduce them and the growth of the Indian economy post economic reforms.
The interactive session then moved on to the Q&A session with the audience asking questions on a wide range of topics encompassing his experience as a policymaker, the various policy decisions made during his tenure and the policy decisions being undertaken under the current government. He also shared his analysis on the highly debated topic of demonetization and its effects on the Indian economy. Further, Dr. Rangarajan put forth his views on the various reforms that he recommends to be initiated in the country. A profoundly interesting reform suggested by Dr. Rangarajan is the role of the Niti Aayog, which was formed after dismantling the Planning Commission. He opined that Niti Aayog should be transformed into an institution that looks at long-term problems of the country such as drinking water, forest resources, attaining self-sufficiency in agriculture, and comes up with strategies and solutions to tackle these problems.
The event also witnessed the launch of a book titled Indian Economy in New Perspectives edited by Dr. Rasananda Panda (Professor, MICA) and Dr. Prashanta Chandra Panda (Associate Professor, PDPU Gandhinagar).
