HISTORIC 10-EVENT TRACK AND FIELD COMPETITION ORGANIZED BY ICO FOR ALL, INC. TOOK PLACE AUGUST 16-17, BREAKING RECORDS AND BARRIERS
GENEVA, Ohio, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2025 Women's Decathlon World Championships made history in track and field this past weekend as it championed gender equality in sport. Despite competing in all the individual track and field events, women are still barred from participating in the decathlon, an all-around competition of ten running, jumping and throwing events, at the international level. This athlete-led World Championship event, now in its second year, is working to change that. The competition was held at the SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio on August 16th and 17th and sponsored by Skyview Ventures, Play Gap, Hettas, and Vault Athletics.
Nikki Boon of the Netherlands claimed the gold and the title of "World's Greatest Athlete." With a final score of 7,451 points, Boon set a national record for the Netherlands and sits in 10th place on the all-time world list. The USA's Katie Straus and Jordyn Bruce rounded out the podium taking silver and bronze with 7,301 and 7,272 points, respectively.
"Growing up, the decathlon was something that men did - not women - but I always dreamed of competing in one," says Boon. "Winning the title of 'World's Greatest Athlete' feels surreal. I hope it will be the first of many decathlons I compete in. Women's decathlon is such an amazing and important movement for women's sports and I am really thankful and proud I get to be a part of that."
"Women belong in the decathlon on the international stage," says Lauren Kuntz, event organizer, American decathlete, and founder of Ico For All, a non-profit dedicated to gender equity in sports. "We're done waiting for permission. As athletes, we're building our own playing field as we push for a women's decathlon in the 2032 Olympics."
