OTTAWA, May 1, 2015 /CNW/ - The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada will be in New Brunswick from May 3 to 4, 2015. He will be attending events focused on education, innovation and volunteerism.

"I'm looking forward to meeting with the warm people of New Brunswick," said His Excellency. "I will visit the communities of Fredericton and Shippagan to highlight their rich history and traditions, as well as to shed light on the innovative work that is being accomplished in various sectors."

Opening address at the 2015 Conference of the Canadian Association of Public Schools – International (CAPS-I)
The Governor General will deliver the opening address at the 2015 CAPS-I Conference. His address will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

CAPS-I is a non-profit association comprised of 114 publicly-funded school districts/boards. Members offer educational programs in English and/or French for international students from around the globe at various grade levels from elementary through to high school graduation. While studying short or longer term, these international students reside with local Canadian host families.

Meeting with 21inc.
Accompanied by the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, the Governor General will take part in a discussion with leaders from 21inc. on the subject of our rapidly changing world and the importance of innovation. This discussion will contribute to the preparation and planning for the third edition of the 21inc. Ideas Festival.  Under the theme of  "100 Ideas for the Next 100 Years", the festival will be held November 4 to 6, 2015, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The 21 Leaders for the 21st Century, commonly known as 21inc. is an innovative non-profit organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial leaders under the age of 40 across Atlantic Canada. They envision a region with the entrepreneurial leadership required to be prosperous, sustainable, and resilient in an interconnected and global 21^st century. The organization has graduated close to 200 youth leaders from their programming and has promoted innovation and regional co-operation through its first three editions of the Ideas Festival.

Meeting with Lobster, Crab and Shrimp Fishermen
Accompanied by Jean Lanteigne, Director General of the Fédération régionale acadienne des pêcheurs professionnels inc. (FRAPP), His Excellency will meet with lobster, crab and shrimp fishers from the Shippagan Quay to observe their day-to-day activities and to learn about their trade in the heart of New Brunswick's commercial fishing capital.

Presentation of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
His Excellency will present the Caring Canadian Award to eight individuals from the Acadian Peninsula who volunteer in their community. His Excellency will also deliver an address.

Visit to the Université de Moncton, Shippagan Campus
Following the presentation of the Caring Canadian Award, His Excellency will meet with Acadian artists specializing in photography, painting, poetry and stained glass at the "Carrefour de l'apprentissage" and will learn about their works and their ties to the community.

Accompanied by Sid-Ahmed Selouani, Vice-Rector at the Shippigan Campus, His Excellency will then visit the multi-purpose fish laboratory to learn about fish research activities.

He will then visit the Laboratoire de recherche en interaction Humain-Système (LARHIS) and the radio frequency identification (RFID) lab, where he will learn more about the innovative partnerships between the university and the public and private sectors in the language industry.

The Shippagan Campus plays a leading role in university education in northeastern New Brunswick. The Université de Moncton offers over 50 programs to students from Shippagan.
