10 Gbps Ethernet Controller and Adapter Market Rebounds in the Second Quarter 2013, According to Dell'Oro Group

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In a newly released report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for information about the telecommunications and networking industries, 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter revenue and shipments were up 14 percent and 16 percent respectively in 2Q13.

"10 Gbps port shipments finally surged in the second quarter, following two consecutive quarters of surprising declines in this emerging market," said Sameh Boujelbene, Senior Analyst covering Controller and Adapter research at Dell'Oro Group. "Nevertheless, we see this rebound as being reflective of the depletion of excess inventory witnessed over the course of the second half of 2012, rather than as an acceleration of the 10 Gbps adoption rate. While 10 Gbps shipments continue to be strong in High Performance Computing and Cloud accounts, recent interviews we conducted revealed that adoption from Enterprise customers remained slow," added Boujelbene.

The Controller and Adapter report tracks 10 Gbps migration onto stand-alone servers versus blade servers, and shows that growth came mainly from blade server shipments, which were fast to move to 10 Gbps, as well as from some specific deployment scenarios with stand-alone servers.  Vendors that are well positioned in either one of those segments showed strong results during the quarter.

The Report also gives details regarding daughter adapter shipments, which had an exceptional quarter, as well as 10G Base-T shipments on servers which were surpassed for the first time by 10G Base-T switches during 2Q13.
