2010 Census Center of Population to be Celebrated in Plato, Mo.

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following release is being issued by the United States Census Bureau:

What: The village of Plato, Mo., will celebrate its selection as the 2010 Census Center of Population on Monday, May 9, at 1 p.m. CDT.  The mean center of population is the point at which an imaginary, flat, weightless and rigid map of the United States would balance perfectly if all 308.7 million residents are counted where they live and all weigh exactly the same.

The event will include music, food, remarks and the unveiling of a commemorative survey mark. Attending will be residents of Plato (pop. 109), 600 students from the Plato R-V School, state and local leaders, and the director of the Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau has released the centers of population for all 50 states, the District of Columbia and all counties based on the 2010 Census.  Historically, many states and counties have marked and celebrated their centers.
