SALEM, Mass., Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Enterprise Center at Salem State University today launched the 2011 North of Boston Business Plan Competition designed to find and support early stage, start-up and existing growth businesses.  Applications are due at the Enterprise Center no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 28 and the actual plans are due by Feb 25 at 5:00 p.m. All information may be found at www.enterprisectr.org/bpc.

Unlike high-tech competitions, companies can be in any line of business as long as they are less than three years old, locate their business in Essex County/Merrimack Valley and are planning to add at least five full-time or FTE employees within two years.  Cash awards of $5,000 first prize, $3,000 second prize and $2,000 third prize will go to the most outstanding plans.

Now in its seventh year, the Competition has become popular, not only among applicants, but throughout the North of Boston business community, which actively supports it.  For regional business leaders, the Competition identifies new growth businesses that can contribute to the local economy.

"For applicants, the real value is not the cash prizes, welcome as they may be, but the credibility they get with the external business community and the valuable feedback and advice of the expert panel of judges.  The judges include early stage investors, venture capitalists, bankers and other experts," said Christine Sullivan, CEO of the Enterprise Center.  "This competition demonstrates our commitment to promoting this region as a place that is attractive to growth companies, especially in this economic climate."

For detailed information about the Competition, including details on how to enter, visit www.enterprisectr.org/bpc or call (978) 542-7528.
