ALEXANDRIA, Ky., Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Fuel efficiency has occupied a prominent position in automotive discourse since the introduction of hybrid vehicles. The demand for fuel efficient alternatives to traditional engines sparked an increase in manufacturers' efforts to build automobiles conscious of fuel consumption. As the variety of hybrid options increased, consumer demand developed beyond a singular consideration of fuel efficiency. On account of the current demand for value-priced hybrids with practical performance, Mike Castrucci of Alexandria assessed the merits of the 2013 Ford C-Max vs. 2013 Toyota Prius V.

The 2013 C-Max registers 45 miles per gallon in the city, and the Prius V registers 44. The similar fuel economy of both hatchbacks demonstrates the current state of the hybrid market. Comparable fuel ratings require consumers to look outside an automobile's fuel efficiency to determine the better value. The lower MSRP of the base 2013 Ford C-Max certainly represents a good deal of value. However, the utility delivered by the C-max engine provides a level of practical performance that pays everyday dividends.

The line of Toyota Prius hybrids has historically struggled to provide adequate acceleration. The 2013 Prius V suffers in this regard as well. Highway driving and cargo carrying pose difficulties for Prius V's 134 horsepower engine. Equipped with a standard engine capable of producing 188 horsepower, the Ford C-Max remains more appropriately outfitted to satisfactorily perform everyday errands. Even with multiple passengers and a loaded cargo area, the 2013 Ford C-Max affords all the response required to move quickly and efficiently.

By the Castrucci of Alexandria assessment, the Ford C-Max provides a greater value to hybrid drivers than the Toyota Prius V. Both vehicles offer a fuel efficient ride. The low cost and practical functionality of the 2013 Ford C-Max, however, cannot be matched by the Prius V.
