EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Jan. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- 3 Phases Renewables today announced a new contract with the City of Santa Monica to supply clean, 100% renewable power for all municipal operations, beginning in January 2016. Santa Monica was the first city in the nation to convert its operations to renewable power and in the coming years it has plans to expand its renewable energy purchasing to benefit all electric utility customers in Santa Monica.
This newly-signed contract between 3 Phases and the City meets California's stringent Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for 100% of the energy provided and covers more than 500 City-owned Direct Access Eligible accounts and approximately 26,000 megawatt-hours of annual consumption. By purchasing renewable power via Direct Access, the City avoids nearly 18,000 metric tons of carbon. The contract can be renewed for up to four additional years and is consistent with the goals established in Santa Monica's Sustainable City Plan.
According to City reports, purchasing electricity using Direct Access saved Santa Monica more than a half of a million dollars in 2013 and 3 Phases plans to help them increase these savings in the future.
"This is a great opportunity for 3 Phases to partner with another city in California, and to provide a cost effective, renewable energy product that improves sustainability within Santa Monica," said 3 Phases' Sales and Marketing Director, Eric Hulin. "We are pleased to work with this forward thinking city."
The renewable energy mix that will now power Santa Monica will be mostly comprised of wind and solar generated in California.
