PNC Bank gives back to the communities it serves in a direct hands-on way, and for a second year will support The Salvation Army's back-to-school backpack program. Through a grant provided by PNC Bank, 800 needy kids will return to school well prepared and ready to learn. New backpacks containing a variety of necessary school supplies will be distributed by The Salvation Army for disadvantaged students in kindergarten through 8th grade.
On the morning of Thursday, August 10th, PNC Bank employees will hand out backpacks to children at The Salvation Army's Homewood Worship and Service Center at 8020 Frankstown Road, where over 100 children from Allegheny County will be served. The remaining 687 backpacks will be distributed throughout the 28-county Western Pennsylvania Division at various Salvation Army Worship and Service Center locations.
"When students have the necessary classroom resources, they are more likely to succeed at school," said Dan Taylor, senior vice president and downtown Pittsburgh regional manager for PNC Bank. "Through this model program with The Salvation Army, we help engage deserving children in their own education and give them the right start to school this fall."
Both a church and a social service organization, The Salvation Army was founded in London, England in 1865. Today, it provides critical services in 129 countries worldwide.
