Academy Sports + Outdoors donates 5,000 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston

KATY, Texas, Aug. 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Academy, Ltd. (d/b/a Academy Sports + Outdoors), a premier sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, donated 5,000 total backpacks stuffed with essential school supplies to all 13 Boys & Girls Clubs across the Greater Houston area.

More than 700 Academy Sports + Outdoors team members stuffed 5,000 backpacks with essential school supplies in one day at the company's headquarters in Katy, Texas. Over the course of the day, the team members were supported by children from the Boys & Girls Clubs. The backpacks were presented to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston and then distributed to all 13 local chapters. The retail value of the backpacks and supplies totals more than $25 and includes crayons, composition notebooks, glue sticks, #2 pencils, facial tissue, pink erasers, ear buds, pocket folders, colored pencils and an Academy Sports + Outdoors water bottle.

This event is an extension of Academy's annual back-to-school shopping spree program, which is in its seventh year and occurring at 100 Academy Sports + Outdoors locations in 15 states. Ten of these events will be at locations in the Houston area. Thirty children at each location will receive a $100 Academy gift card to use towards uniforms, backpacks, shoes and other school necessities.

Academy Sports + Outdoors currently operates 28 stores in the Greater Houston area and 94 stores in the state of Texas. Academy will open two new stores in the Greater Houston area in New Caney and East Pearland later this year.
