Acker Energizes Hong Kong With HK$30 Million Sold: 10% of All Lots Set New World Records
DRC, Petrus dominate top lots but diversity trending is up in Asia
HONG KONG, Nov. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite the inconvenience of the 'Occupy Central' protests in Hong Kong, nearly 200 registered bidders packed the auction room, competing actively with a mix of absentee and online bidders to achieve HK$30 million in sales in only 600+ lots.

While DRC was once again the leading producer this weekend with 13 of the sale's Top 20 lots, Bordeaux was strong, taking six of the Top Ten thanks to Petrus and Le Pin. Yet beyond Hong Kong's continued desire to own and drink these famous names, the diversification and expansion of what collectors were buying made itself very clear this weekend. The incredible collection of Rioja and Unico from "The Conquistador" once again led the charge, setting 14 new World Records. Opus One also set eight, and wines from Harlan, Screaming Eagle and Robert Mondavi all exceeded high estimates, as did wines from Chave, Guigal, Rayas, Gaja and Sassicaia. Of course, Bordeaux and Burgundy were still in significant demand. All the Bordeaux First Growths, the most important Super Seconds and Burgundy stars such as DRC, Rousseau, Meo-Camuzet, Leroy, Vogue, Liger-Belair, Dujac, Drouhin, d'Angerville, Leflaive, Coche Dury and more soared over the highs. Comte de Vogue set six new World Records, and DRC five.
"The numbers and names speak for themselves. The Hong Kong market is alive and well, but as diverse as the wine results were, so were the buyers. Four out of the Top Ten buyers were Americans, even though Mainland China took the top spot. Thailand also snuck into the mix, as well as Singapore, Macau, Switzerland and Germany all in the Top 40," said Acker Merrall & Condits' CEO, John Kapon. "But this auction was about Hong Kong more than anything else. It was great to see such energy in the room, and we look forward to New York's response in a mere ten days, when we will celebrate my 43rd birthday on the evening of Thursday, November 20th. Drink lots of water all day if you plan on attending in person."
