ACLU To Launch "Constitution Day, Brought To You By The ACLU"

New Program Uses Interactive Tools and Celebrity Support to Educate Students About The Constitution

NEW YORK, Sept. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will launch a new program designed to cultivate new generations of civil libertarians, it was announced today. Geared towards students in grades five through nine, the annual program, "Constitution Day, Brought To You By The ACLU," debuts on September 17.

Passed by Congress in 2004, Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution. It is observed on September 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention delegates signed the Constitution in 1787.

"As the nation's premier guardian of civil liberties and leading expert on the Constitution, the ACLU believes it is extremely important that all young people in the United States have a solid understanding and appreciation for the living document that protects their individual rights and civil liberties," said ACLU Communications Director Emily Tynes. "We are proud to work with our partners and educators across the country to launch and implement this new program designed to build future generations of civil libertarians."

Joining the program entitled, For me. For All. For Real., are star of the hit television show "Glee," Melissa Benoist; writer, actor, comedian and star of "Raising Hope" and Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur," Lucas Neff; and star of "Melissa and Joey" and the acclaimed film, "Kings of Summer," Nick Robinson. These young celebrities lend their voices to a thought-provoking advertisement to show their support for teaching the Constitution to youth. In addition, Teen Kids News will air an interview on September 14 on the importance of the Constitution and a "Constitution" category on the popular game show "Jeopardy" will air on September 17.

The program curriculum features an interactive website, group discussions, role playing, and a comprehensive guide for educators. It also includes a contest offering monetary prizes totaling $25,000 to participating schools. This year marks the inaugural year of an on-going annual program.
