ACPE Announces Support for IOM's CEO Checklist for High Value Health Care

TAMPA, Fla., June 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), which represents more than 10,000 high-level physician leaders in all types of health care organizations across the U.S., today announced its support for the CEO Checklist for High Value Health Care and asked to join the Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care as a co-signatory.

"The current climate of excessive costs and unreliable outcomes present in health care today is unacceptable," said Dr. Peter Angood, ACPE's CEO. "By promoting the atmosphere of transparency, innovation and accountability outlined in the Checklist, we as health care leaders can create a more efficient and effective system."

The CEO Checklist correlates well with the nine key elements that ACPE believes must be part of future health care in America. It must be a system that is value-driven, evidence-based, quality-centered, safe, measured, fair, innovative, streamlined and physician-led.

As an organization devoted to improving health care through the empowerment of physician leaders, ACPE has already embraced many of the ideas described in the Checklist:

Governance priority

ACPE is committed to helping physicians become better leaders. Through its CME courses, physician leadership training programs, publications and collaborative communities, ACPE strives to provide physicians with the skills necessary to become more effective as CEOs, administrators or simply the member of the clinical team others look to for guidance.

Culture of continuous learning 

As an education provider, ACPE encourages physicians to continue learning throughout their careers. More than 20,000 physicians have completed ACPE's foundational course, the Physician in Management seminar, and more than 950 have graduated from ACPE master's programs since 1997.

IT best practices

ACPE encourages physician leaders to take a more proactive role in the implementation and utilization of technology. In 2011, the College created a Health Care IT Leadership Certificate to encourage physicians to begin taking the lead in this area. Already, 54 physicians have completed their certificates and many more are in the pipeline.

Integrated care

ACPE strongly supports the delivery of team-based care and is actively working to promote teamwork and collaboration. In 2011, the College created the Leape Ahead Award, named for pioneering patient safety advocate Dr. Lucian Leape, which recognizes health care organizations making significant advances in culture change, specifically in the areas of improved professionalism, effective communication and genuine teamwork.

Reliability and feedback

Quality, high reliability and accountability are at the core of ACPE's educational offerings. In 2010, ACPE formed a partnership to offer a master's degree in health care quality and patient safety management. The College continues search for ways to provide physicians with the tools, methods, knowledge and strategies to improve health care quality and patient safety.
