Adaptiva's Microsoft Ignite Survey Reveals 71% of IT Leaders Plan to Wait More Than Six Months to Deploy Windows 10
Only 11% of organizations are still running Windows XP, down from 53% in 2014
SEATTLE, June 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Adaptiva, a leading global provider of add-ons for Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager, today released new insights from a user survey conducted at Microsoft Ignite 2015. Nearly three-fourths of those surveyed (71%) said their companies plan to wait at least six months after the Windows 10 release to migrate to the new OS. Half (49%) said they plan to wait a year or more. Larger companies are less aggressive, with 80% of those with over 100,000 nodes planning to adopt in a year or more. Adaptiva's survey findings validate the prediction that Windows 10 will reach about one quarter (350M) of all PCs within its first year.
Nearly half (40%) of respondents to Adaptiva's Microsoft Ignite survey represented companies with more than 10,000 nodes (desktops, laptops, servers). Remarkably, only 11% of all respondents' organizations are still running Windows XP. This is down from 53% last year in a similar survey Adaptiva conducted at TechEd 2014, and indicates that the expired OS is all but dead in IT. These findings come on the heels of Microsoft's recent announcement around Windows 10 availability as a free upgrade to all machines running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 starting July 29. The no-cost upgrade will be available for only one year following Windows 10's official release, and is forecasted to drastically spike adoption of the much-anticipated new OS.
Adaptiva's survey results revealed the biggest obstacles holding respondents back from migrating to Windows 10 quickly were application compatibility and time investment (98%), followed by user training (35%), and product maturity (23%). The majority (54%) say the cloud has no impact on their ability to upgrade and patch applications or migrate operating systems. However, 40% say the cloud is actually making it harder for them to perform these basic systems management tasks, up from 7% who felt that way in 2014.
Other key findings from Adaptiva's Microsoft Ignite 2015 survey include:
- The vast majority of respondents were running Windows 7 (89%) and/or Windows 8 (57%).
- Of those survey takers at large organizations with more than 10,000 nodes, 99% are running Configuration Manager in their enterprise and 62% plan to use it to deploy Windows 10.
- To move to the new OS, nearly three-fourths (73%) of large organizations plan to utilize side-by-side replacements – deploying new computers with Windows 10. This is followed by 36% who plan to perform in-place upgrades.
- Most companies plan to use zero-touch and light-touch strategies to migrate to Windows 10 (60%).
