Advanced Recovery Systems and DrugRehab.com Launch New Initiative to Help People in Recovery Reach Educational Goals

ARS has also partnered with the University of Central Florida's (UCF) Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) to support people of all ages in recovery, from the admissions process through campus life, and ultimately graduation, while ensuring an advanced approach to care.

According to a 2014 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), substance abuse is common among college students: More than one-third of full-time college students aged 18 to 22 engaged in binge drinking in the past month, and about 20 percent used an illicit drug in the past month. Research shows that, on an average day, more than 2,000 full-time college students drank alcohol for the first time, and more than 1,000 used an illicit drug for the first time. For some people, these new temptations can be the influences that drive an otherwise healthy person toward a hazardous habit – an addiction.

While a growing collegiate recovery movement is supporting students in colleges across the country, campus recovery resources are still relatively limited, and students in recovery may face challenges that make it difficult for them to thrive.

"Through our extensive experience working with people struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, we know that recovery isn't a single time point – it takes years of support and reinforcement to live a healthy lifestyle," said Dr. Timothy Huckaby, medical director of Orlando Recovery Center. "ARS's Guide for Students in Recovery and partnership with UCF's CRC aren't just about treatment – we want to educate everyone who comes through one of our centers, and empower people in recovery everywhere, that they can fulfill their full educational potential and live happy and productive lives."

The UCF's CRC is an example of what a collegiate recovery can be. In addition to offering a dedicated space on campus with study rooms, the CRC provides a full continuum of care – from prevention, to intervention, through recovery – under the guidance of licensed health professionals and with the support of peers. As part of the CRC's partnership with ARS, this active community will now be an even greater resource for people in recovery of all ages, by supporting them through the application process to UCF and once they get to campus.

"When I started college, I never missed an opportunity to party. It took a couple of lost jobs and a DUI arrest before I realized that I didn't have my behaviors under control and needed to seek treatment," said Brett Watson, co-founder and activities coordinator at UCF's CRC and intake manager at Advanced Recovery Systems. "But seeking treatment wasn't so easy, because there were few resources available to me. After I worked on my recovery, I helped found UCF's CRC to build the support system that so many others and I needed. I'm proud of our partnership with ARS, which will help UCF to be a flagship collegiate recovery community."
