AGTA Announces the 2018 AGTA Spectrum Awards™ Winners

"As someone who has nurtured a lifelong love affair with colored gemstones and pearls, the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ judging week is unbridled pleasure.  It feeds my color jones and it is one of the most important endeavors AGTA pursues in its mission to spread the gospel of color," said Douglas K. Hucker, AGTA CEO. "This year we had the perfect trifecta of components that make our Spectrum Awards a memorable success.  First, the judges were exquisitely professional, with strong resumes and strong personalities, but they worked in tandem to appraise the work, creativity, and ingenuity of the over 400 entries to the competition. Secondly, we had a wave of new designers and first-time entrants - young people with fresh perspectives that were willing to embrace creative risk in their work. Over a dozen of our awards will be presented to first time winners!  The third component was the growing breadth of material entered.  We saw an increase in loose gemstones in all of the categories in the Cutting Edge Division and that diversity was evidenced in the absolute cornucopia of color and variety in the jewelry divisions."

This year's AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM will be presented during the 2019 AGTA GemFair^TM Tucson to be held February 5 -10, at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona. Winning entries will be displayed during the show and the 2018 AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM recipients will be recognized during the 2018 AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM Gala, on Saturday, February 9. Tickets for the gala are $100 and cocktail attire is encouraged.

AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM entries were judged on the basis of overall beauty and wearability, innovative design, effective use of materials, quality of gemstones, quality of workmanship, broad‐based consumer appeal and potential to generate positive publicity for natural colored gemstones.

AGTA Cutting Edge Awards^TM honor excellence and creativity in lapidary arts, including natural colored gemstones and cultured pearls, carvings and other gem materials.

Platinum Honors™, sponsored by Platinum Guild International, recognizes outstanding use of platinum in colored gemstone and/or cultured pearl jewelry in the five Spectrum Awards categories and for the Platinum Honors Innovation – Bridal Wear under $2,500 (semi-mount only), Platinum Honors Innovation – Classical under $3,500 and Platinum Honors Innovation – Day Wear under $2,000.  PGI also awards two "Best of" awards – Best Use of Platinum and Color and Best Use of Platinum Crown.

WJA Gem DIVA ^TM Awards celebrated its seventh year of association with the competition.  WJA GEM DIVA^TM Awards were presented in the Bridal Wear, Evening Wear, Classical and Business/Day Wear categories. All women who entered the AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM competition were eligible for this category.

Manufacturing Honors recognizes outstanding use of colored gemstones and cultured pearls in jewelry appropriate to be manufactured in production quantities. All designs that qualify for judging in the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ competition will also automatically be qualified for Manufacturing Honors judging.

Fashion Forward Honors recognizes the outstanding use of colored gemstone and/or cultured pearl in artful, trend‐setting jewelry. All necklaces, earrings, bracelets or other jewelry that qualified for judging in the AGTA Spectrum Awards^TM competition automatically qualified for Fashion Forward Honors judging.
