"I am honored to join the Transatlantic Institute and to contribute to AJC's mission of promoting human rights around the globe and peace and security for Israel," said Schwammenthal. "With an emphasis on countering the rise of anti-Semitism and reinforcing the strategic and values-based ties between Europe and Israel, the AJC Transatlantic Institute mission is as vital to the future of Europe as it is to the Jewish people."
The Transatlantic Institute was established in 2004 in Brussels, the seat of the European Union, to advocate for strengthened transatlantic cooperation on core issues confronting the democratic world – issues that are consonant with AJC's global priorities.
"The Transatlantic Institute, since its inception, has developed the relationships and understanding that are so essential to building a more secure world dedicated to democracy and pluralism," said Harold Tanner, acting chair of the Transatlantic Institute. Tanner was AJC President at the time of the institute's founding.
Schwammenthal has served as an editorial page writer and op-ed editor for the Wall Street Journal Europe since 2004. A native of Germany, he is an accomplished journalist, with expertise in international affairs.
Prior to the Journal, Schwammenthal was a reporter for Dow Jones Newswires in Bonn, Berlin and Brussels. He holds a Master of Law (European Law and Policy) from the University of Manchester, a M.A. in International Relations and International Communications from Boston University, and did his undergraduate studies at Aachen University in Germany
"Our reasons for creating the Transatlantic Institute are even more important today as the U.S. and Europe confront common global challenges," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "A child of Europe with extensive global experience, Daniel Schwammenthal is ideally suited to lead our initiatives in Brussels."
